With the newest version of its most premium ThinkPad laptop, Lenovo is prioritizing repairability. The X1 Carbon G14 has a new "space frame" construction with a modular keyboard and USB-C ports, as well as Intel's new "Panther Lake" Core Ultra X7 processors.

Among the ThinkPad brand, a laptop series known for historically great repairability, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon has never been among the models that are easy to repair. From integrated batteries, soldered RAM and top-loaded keyboards integrated into the palmrest, it paved the way for many design changes that have made many a more recent ThinkPad laptop less repairable. The primary focus of this laptop has always been to push the boundary on what is possible in terms of mobility.

At CES 2026, Lenovo has introduced the newest version of the X1 Carbon series, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition. The successor to the well-received ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 keeps the mobility of the X1 Carbon while making it a much more repairable system.

To do this, Lenovo has fundamentally altered the way the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 is constructed. Ever since the X1 Carbon Gen 2, the mainboard of the laptop has been mounted directly against the keyboard frame - to replace the keyboard, the whole device had to be dismantled, and the keyboard could not be exchanged independently of the palmrest. With the new X1 Carbon Gen 14, Lenovo separated the keyboard frame from the main structure frame of the laptop, which means it can be changed much more easily and quickly.

Lenovo calls this new design "Space Frame". Supposedly, it yields other benefits, too: With the new design, Lenovo was able to change the positioning of the internal components to free more space for the cooling system. The new version of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 is able to cool up to 30 W under sustained load according to Lenovo, substantially more than the X1 Carbon G13 (available on Amazon), which was limited to around 20 W. This increase in cooling capacity is needed, since the X1 Carbon G14 Aura Edition will feature Intel's Panther Lake Core Ultra 300 H class CPUs, the new Intel Core Ultra X7, instead of the less power-hungry Lunar Lake chips of the predecessor. Different from Lunar Lake, Panther Lake will support up to 64 GB of LPDDR5X-9600 memory, which remains soldered.

As for the rest of the device, the X1 Carbon Gen 14 features a revised keyboard with a new position for the combined power button and fingerprint sensor in the upper right corner, as well as an additional USB-C port on the right side of the system, instead of the second USB-A that the X1 Carbon Gen 13 had. Importantly, the USB-C ports, which are used for charging, are now modular and thus repairable, too.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 still features 2.8K (2,880 x 1,800) OLED or WUXGA IPS 14-inch 16:10 panels, and there is optional 5G. It still weighs less than 1 kg (OLED/Magnesium Bottom version only). Also, there is a new 10 Mpix webcam with a wide field of view, the X1 Carbon Gen 13 topped out at 8 Mpix.
