Motorola has introduced the follow-up to its 2024-announced Moto Tag 1 - the Moto Tag 2. This Apple Airtag (curr. $19 on Amazon)-alternative is a compact tracking accessory for Android devices and integrated with Google’s Find Hub network. The Moto Tag 2 is compatible with Android 9 and newer smartphones and is certified to meet Google Find Hub accessory requirements.
The tracker supports Bluetooth 6.0 with Channel Sounding alongside Ultra-Wideband (UWB) for more precise location tracking on supported Android devices with UWB hardware enabled. Motorola states that UWB-based tracking requires the tag to be within 100 meters of another compatible Android device participating in the Find Hub network. Location sharing and tracking functions rely on Bluetooth and location services being enabled on the paired phone.
Power is supplied by a user-replaceable CR2032 coin cell, with Motorola rating battery life at over 500 days under typical conditions. The Moto Tag 2 also includes a built-in speaker rated at 77 dB at 10 cm, which lets the tag emit audible alerts when locating nearby items.
The device measures 31.9 × 31.9 × 8 mm and comes with a plastic and metal construction. It carries an IP68 rating, meaning it is protected against dust and can withstand immersion in up to 1.5 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes under lab conditions. Motorola also specifies an operating temperature range of 0°C to 45°C.
Privacy-wise, the Tag 2 gets end-to-end encryption and unwanted tracking alerts to notify users if an unknown tracker is detected moving with them. Additional smart features, which can be accessed through the Moto Tag app, include remote camera triggering, phone-finding functions, and location sharing. The Moto Tag 2 is compatible with third-party accessories and will be offered in Pantone Arabesque and Pantone Laurel Oak color options.
