An early leak has revealed Lenovo's next attempt at building a ThinkPad-branded 2-in-1. Tipped to feature Intel Panther Lake processors, the ThinkPad X13 Detachable Gen 1 could be more repairable than the Microsoft Surface Pro without compromising on other classic ThinkPad details either.

It seems that a new Surface Pro alternative is in the works. This time, Lenovo is set to have a crack at a return of its ThinkPad Detachable range. However, the new ThinkPad Detachable will not directly replace the existing ThinkPad X12 Detachable G2.

To recap, Lenovo released the ThinkPad X12 Detachable G2 in 2024. Powered by Intel Meteor Lake-U series processors, the ThinkPad X12 Detachable G2 has since been surpassed in terms of performance by both ARM and x86 versions of the Surface Pro 11. Likewise, even the lesser 12-inch Surface Pro packs more of a punch with its Snapdragon X Plus (X1P-42-100) chipset (curr. $649.99 on Amazon).

From the inclusion of Thunderbolt 4 ports alone, we can glean that the ThinkPad X13 Detachable Gen 1 leverages some kind of Intel processor. While Windows Latest speculates that these could be from the Panther Lake family, the photos shared do not confirm as much. Still, we can infer some additional details from the images embedded above and below.

For instance, the ThinkPad X13 Detachable Gen 1 could be comparatively repairable for a 2-in-1 thanks to a chassis that opens from the rear rather than the display like on many alternatives. Also, the 2-in-1 surrounds its circa 13-inch display with relatively thin bezels, the bottom of which is hidden by its detachable keyboard when in use. Lenovo's keyboard has been modernised too, but without sacrificing a Trackpoint, physical mouse buttons and classic ThinkPad keyboard keys. Unfortunately, pricing and availability remain unknown for now.
