Microsoft abruptly hikes prices of all Surface notebooks

Recent weeks have seen the prices of just about everything skyrocket. Game consoles, such as the PlayStation 5 Pro, Ayaneo Pocket Air Mini and Pocket Vert, have all become dearer. Even subscription services like YouTube Premium have not been spared. The latest victim, according to Windows Central, is now Microsoft Laptops. Here’s a list of affected SKUs and their current prices.
- Surface Pro 12: $1,049 (2025 price $799)
- Surface Pro 13: $1,449 (2025 price $1,199)
- Surface Laptop 13: $1,149 (2025 price $899)
- Surface Laptop 13.8: $1,449 (2025 price $1,199)
- Surface Laptop 15: $1,549 (2025 price $1,499)
The above price changes are for entry-level SKUs with 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB of storage and a Snapdragon X Plus SoC (Snapdragon X Elite for the Surface Laptop 15). Having been designed for the entry-level segment, the SoCs in question weren’t very powerful to begin with, and paying up to $300 extra for one makes it even less viable, especially when compared to what Apple has to offer in the price segment. A Microsoft spokesperson stated, "Due to recent increases in memory and component costs, Surface is updating pricing on Microsoft.com for its current‑generation hardware portfolio."
While that argument does hold true to some extent, RAM prices have largely stagnated and are scheduled to fall as the year commences. So, it might not be the only reason for the abrupt price increases in what would otherwise be deemed as office laptops. A more likely reason could be to set price expectations for future Snapdragon X2 Plus-powered SKUs, which could show up anytime now that the top-shelf Snapdragon X2 Elite laptops are out of the door.
