Lenovo's ThinkPad T1g Gen 8 is a sleek and powerful multimedia laptop, which does not use professional graphics cards. The problem is that most customers simply do not recognize the new model name.

Business customers looking for a high-quality and sleek 16-inch laptop could choose Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Extreme for the last couple of years. These laptops were equipped with regular GeForce GPUs, while the workstation counterpart ThinkPad P1 was equipped with professional GPUs. For the previous 7th generation, the manufacturer decided to discontinue the X1 Extreme and only offer the ThinkPad P1 moving forward, which was then available with both consumer as well as professional GPUs.

For the latest 8th generation, however, the workstation model ThinkPad P1 is once again only available with professional GPUs. If you do not need such a PRO GPU, there is now the new ThinkPad T1g Gen 8, which is completely identical except for the graphics cards, which are once again consumer GeForce chips. We reviewed the new model and it is a very good, but also very expensive multimedia laptop.

Considering the history of the series, we do not think it is a good idea to skip the familiar designation ThinkPad X1 Extreme. Even though Lenovo probably does not want to attract the typical multimedia customer base (which is supposed to get the Yoga Pro 9i 16 instead), we do not think this would be very likely considering the high price. The high-end SKU of the Yoga Pro with the slightly faster RTX 5070 as well as the slightly better Tandem OLED screen already retails for about €2,700, while the ThinkPad T1g Gen 8 has a starting price of around €2,900 with the RTX 5060 and a 60Hz 1080p screen. And business customers, who might not be completely up to date with all the model lines, might not know what a ThinkPad T1g is.

Considering sales figures, we are not sure Lenovo's idea to skip the familiar ThinkPad X1 Extreme designation was a good idea. For more information about the new ThinkPad T1g Gen 8 please see our comprehensive review.
