High quality, great keyboard, CAMM2-RAM, matt Tandem-OLED - ThinkPad T1g Gen 8 is Lenovo's flagship laptop

In recent years, we often criticized Lenovo for the declining quality of their ThinkPad models, especially in terms of keyboards as well as the display selection. With the new ThinkPad T1g Gen 8 and its workstation counterpart ThinkPad P1 Gen 8, respectively, the manufacturer proves that they can still produce a high-end machine without these issues. The result is probably the best ThinkPad you can currently buy.
With a starting price of almost €3,000 you can certainly expect high quality and the T1g does not disappoint. The 16-inch chassis is pretty sleek, but both the stability (base unit as well as lid) as well as the build quality are beyond any doubt. The excellent keyboard also fits into this. The key travel is still 1.5 mm, but the precise and crisp feedback almost reminds us of the amazing ThinkPad keyboard from previous years. Depending on your own usage scenario, only the lack of a dedicated numpad might be an issue. The haptic trackpad does not offer dedicated TrackPoint buttons anymore, but it works and we think the advantages clearly outweigh this in practice.
In terms of features, you get pretty much everything you could wish for. Thunderbolt 5 is already integrated, you get a modern Wi-Fi 7 module and you can install two PCIe 5.0 SSDs. The memory is a CAMM2 module and replaceable, but it also means you are limited to 64 GB, which can also be a limitation for certain usage scenarios. The only things we are missing is a 5G module as well as a SmartCard reader, so you can easily connect to your business network.
The performance figures are also good with the combination of the Intel Core Ultra 7 255H and the GeForce RTX 5070, even though they are not the fastest versions. When it comes to the displays, it gets a bit more difficult. Our review unit was equipped with the optional Tandem OLED panel, but the image is a bit grainy due to the matte surface and the touch layer. However, the matte surface is obviously beneficial with reflections and the brightness is also very high. The battery runtime is also good, but the base display (1080p with 60 Hz) is not really appropriate considering the high base price.
All in all, Lenovo offers a very good all-rounder for wealthy business customers, because the prices quickly surpass the €4,000 mark. We hope Lenovo will take some of the positive aspects and implement them into other ThinkPad models. Please see our comprehensive review for more information on the new ThinkPad T1g Gen 8.
