Oppo Reno

As I always mention in my smartphone reviews, we don’t get to see too much change in terms of performance in the world of smartphones. What we are getting differently each year is either related to cameras, case or maybe some software. I doubt this year is any different. Meaning, the Samsung S10 series or Huawei P30 models, they all come with new chips for sure. But chips are no longer really focusing on performance, instead they focus on efficiency to provide more juice and optimization for games and software etc. Then what we focus on started to become everything else then performance in most of the cases. With new trend I see, it is becoming more about cameras and design. Oppo, in this regard provides two phones. One is the Oppo Reno 5G and the other is the Oppo Reno 10X Zoom. The difference? Well, cameras. Both models are great in terms of cameras, but the Reno 10X Zoom takes it one step further. Though, it is not the first phone to do it. In terms of functionality, it is close to the Huawei P30 Pro with its 10x lossless zoom functionality. But what is different overall in Reno models is how it uses the whole screen, well almost. Close to 93% of the screen is used and you don’t have a notch, but maybe something more irritating. A small camera pops up each time you want to fire up the front camera. But more on that later. First screen. The Edge-to-edge OLED screen is amazing. It is sad that we don’t have the content or content with resolution to utilize it fully. But overall, it is a great screen. Now back to front camera. Yup, it is something that pops up and goes back when you are done with it. Which one is worse: a notch or a pop-up? Well, you have to decide it. But considering the price, the Oppo Reno is cheaper compared to competitors and considering the fact that it has no drawbacks or very similar in terms of performance, it can definitely be an option. You just have to live with the fact of questions like “What is Oppo?” or “Is it something low-end?”. Well, Oppo is a well established brand in China and not in other parts of the world yet. Oppo Reno 10x Zoom

Oppo has been teasing their optical zoom concept for some time now. It was first shown in MWC Barcelona two years ago and then again in MWC 2019. But this time, it went up from 5x optical zoom to 10x zoom. Finally, the phone in its complete form is here. In terms of design, it looks as premium as it gets for today’s smartphone design. The entire front of the phone is covered in the latest Corning Gorilla Glass 6, which should give a pretty stellar build quality. Also, the front is all screen with very slim bezels on the edges. This is as full screen as it gets. Although the screen-to-body ratio is only 86.8%, the front literally features nothing other than the screen. 

The front camera pops up in a shark-fin like motorized mechanism. The front earpiece is also placed at the top of this pop-up module. The clean design is extended to the back, too - with only the triple camera setup, the phone looks like it does not have much to carry. However, the dual LED flash is housed in the rear part of the pop-up module. This makes full use of an additional module that is attached to the phone with some heavy extra hardware, such as the motor. The shark-fin pop-up module only pops up when the front camera is in use or when the rear flash is activated. Otherwise, it stays down all the time, even when the earpiece is in use. Sound sips in through the gaps to listen via this earpiece. Oppo claims that the mechanism can detect falls early and retract itself to avoid any damage to it. When the mechanism is given some resistance, it would simply disable power to the motor and retry a moment later. Quite smart for something that could potentially be a huge problem for a smartphone.

The screen on this phone is a 6.6-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels, bringing the pixel density to 387 pixels per inch. There is really nothing to complain about the display. It is as crisp and clear as they get. The fingerprint scanner is located under the display to cater for that all-screen design. As for the hardware, it comes with a top-of-the-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 octa-core processor coupled with the Adreno 640 GPU. It has an option with 6 GB of RAM with 128 GB of built-in memory or 6 GB/8 GB of RAM with 256 GB of built-in option. It also features a memory-card slot to expand the memory. All three options can give some pretty amazing performance in terms of gaming and multitasking. 

Despite what the name suggests, the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom edition only features 5x optical zoom. It also features 10x hybrid zoom with its lossless technology, which is what the phone is named after, and up to 50x digital zoom. The triple camera setup consists of a 48MP wide angle camera with OIS, a 13MP periscope camera with 5x optical zoom and OIS, and an 8MP ultra-wide camera. There are not many reviews to test its photography capabilities yet, but early reviews put it on the flagship range. On the front part of the pop-up is a 16MP wide angle camera with LED flash. The phone also features stereo speaker output by utilizing the top earpiece. It does not have an earphone jack, and the Type-C port is placed at the mid-bottom of the phone. The Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is shipped with a large 4065mAh battery that supports Oppos’s 20W VOOC flash charge. For its price, the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is a solid device. It delivers everything that other flagship devices do at a cheaper price and with an interesting design.

Oppo Reno2

There are smartphones that combine a flagship design and midrange internals in order to keep the costs down, e.g. the Xiaomi Mi Note 10, which features the world’s first 108-megapixel smartphone camera sensor despite the middling chipset powering it, is definitely a perfectly example for this scenario. Similarly, the Oppo Reno 2 has entered the market combining a flagship design with a minimum of four cameras around the back and an incorporation of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G processor, just like the Mi Note 10. The processor is definitely not the best option for gaming capabilities when compared with the much more advanced Snapdragon 855 processor, which has been incorporated within the OnePlus TT and the Realme X2 Pro. However, the Oppo Reno 2 can cater up to 256 GB of internal storage for its mid-range price.

As far as the screen and display are concerned, it provides an all-screen display with a completely futuristic approach for smartphones. The phone also comes with a total of 8 GB of RAM and a bigger 4,000mAh battery. The battery size caters for a longer battery life and better user experience, as there will not be much hassle or the need for frequent charging. Apart from that, the Oppo Reno 2 has been built with an under-display fingerprint scanner. Again, these features are provided for such an affordable price. In addition, the array of cameras within the smartphone is quite similar to that found in the much more expensive iPhone 11 Pro. These include one wide camera, one ultra-wide camera, one zoom camera and a 2-megapixel monochrome camera which gathers all the needed information for portrait effects. This helps cater for an immersive, premium user experience while taking great pictures.

Despite all its added features, the Oppo Reno 2 might still not be the best camera phone out there due to the absence of the 5x optical zoom of the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom and Huawei P30 Pro. There is also a lack of OIS on the telephoto camera, and its 4K video recording is definitely beatable by much better options out there. However, it is an undeniable fact that the Oppo Reno 2 is indeed one of the best budget camera phones available on the market at the moment. This is not just the mere opinion of some reviewers, but rather a lived-by experience by users. The reason for such a statement would be due to the ability of the phone to capture photos with a reasonable amount of detail and punch to it under good light settings irrespective of the camera utilized.

The Oppo Reno 2 is available in two colors, Ocean Blue or Luminous and Black. Despite having limited options in color variants, this smartphone can never be ignored for its affordability and the features that come with it.

Oppo Reno2 Z

The original Oppo Reno Z was known as the leading mid-range phone according to some of the best reviews out there. Even though it was not a perfect bet, but it offered a lot of hardware for an affordable price compared to other mid-rangers. In comparison with its predecessor, the Oppo Reno 2Z has come onto the market to add just a little bit more spice with its extra two rear cameras along with a motorized front camera. This was intended to enhance the great screen to look way better than it would otherwise.

It is definitely undeniable that there is indeed some lingering dissatisfaction among Oppo users regarding Oppo’s ColorOS interface, as it struggles to make its mark. But that would not be enough to disregard the fact that the Oppo Reno 2Z is quite a compelling phone to look out for. As far as the design of the phone is concerned, the thicker design allows the rear cameras to lie completely flush within the back glass. In addition to the camera positioning, such thickness also permits the relatively large 4,035mAh battery to be fitted perfectly into the phone. It is worthwhile to note that such a battery was literally fitted in, even without the type of internal engineering that went into the making of high-end phones such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus.

In terms of cameras, there is a tiny metal bump above the cameras which prevents any damage to the camera glass, as it will be able to protect it against any accidental scraping or rubbing of the whole back of the phone against any rough surface. This phone provides a top-end premium look at a very affordable price. While the most expensive phones out there are ditching their headphone jacks, the Oppo Reno 2Z has still managed to keep that feature intact. Apart from that, the Reno 2Z also has an incorporated screen protector and a faux leather case for further protection.

The Oppo Reno 2Z has a fast in-screen fingerprint scanner. It has a 6.52-inch OLED ‘panoramic’ display that is simply brilliant for gaming and watching videos. The display is arguably even better than the curved display of the top-notch Galaxy S10, because the Reno 2Z does not face issues with color shift and brightness drop-off as the Galaxy S10 does. However, the Oppo Reno 2Z’s screen color seems to be very saturated, and the option to tone it down, which was present in the Reno 2, has been removed in the 2Z. The quite slippery finishing is also considered one of the drawbacks of Oppo Reno 2Z. Therefore, the Reno 2Z definitely carries some good and some not-so-good features within it that need to be considered by users before purchase. The phone is available in two colors, namely Luminous Black and Sky White.

Oppo introduced the Reno series with a promise of producing impeccable device with scintillating design and impressive performance. Simply put, a smartphone which captivates the eyes and the user’s heart at the same time with its offerings. Oppo Reno 3 Pro is the latest to join the Reno series and just like its predecessors, it managed to carry the legacy forward with its gorgeous design. No doubt, this phone is definitely the type which stands out of the crowd for its design and presentation. Reno 3 Pro has a dual-tone gradient on the glass back which creates magic by radiating different shades of two-colored tones when held at various angles against the light source. Even though the back gives an impression of being glass, it is not actually made of glass but rather a polycarbonate material with a glossy touch to mimic glass. Oppo Reno 3 Pro has been incorporated with a 6.4 inches AMOLED screen display. The display produces good colors which are vibrant but gets oversaturated at times. The fingerprint sensor embedded under the display is an optical sensor which works well but nothing over the top to really talk about. The Color OS 7.1 which has been incorporated within this smartphone is definitely smooth and fast without any of the visual glitches or needless animations which was seen in older versions of ColorOS. It has been engineered in such a way to work really well with the MediaTek’s new Helio P95 chip processor along with 8GB of RAM. The processor does a good job of handling too many memory-intensive apps concurrently with ease. However, the processor does struggle slightly when the camera processes high-resolution image but does not impact the overall output.

Oppo Reno 3 Pro comes in with four cameras at the back which includes a 64-megapixel Samsung sensor main camera, a 13-megapixel telephoto lens, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor and a 2-megapixel mono lens. Apart from that, the phone also includes a 44-megapixel primary sensor and a 2-megapixel depth sensor at the front. The main sensor performs an impressive job of photography by producing vibrant and detailed images under bright lighting. The telephoto comes into play to capture very far distanced images. The zooming capability of Reno 3 Pro definitely won hearts by allowing steady shots of things afar. In addition, there is also an Expert mode which enables XHD resolution for photo capturing. This feature allows photo shoot with 108-megapixel resolution. Despite being the first in the world to incorporate a 44-megapixel front selfie-camera sensor, there is nothing extraordinary about this feature itself. The selfies are definitely good but not the best out there. In terms of its battery, Reno 3 Pro comes in with a 4025mAh battery with Oppo’s VOOC charging. Even though the charging is not as fast as Super VOOC charging that was found in Reno Ace, it does charge up to 50 percent in about 20 minutes. Oppo Reno 3 Pro comes in three colors namely Auroral Blue, Midnight Black and Sky White for users to choose from.
