Reviews for the Oppo Reno2
The Oppo Reno2 promises excellent picture-taking capabilities, long battery life and a lot of performance. Visually, the smartphone is definitely impressive. Our review will show which other qualities the phone can bring to the table.

Archive.org versionThat said, because it’s been on market for a while, the Reno 10x Zoom can be had for as low as S$700 now (street prices). So, if you’re really looking to buy now, that would be the option to get as the street price of the Reno2 has only fallen to S$680 in terms of street price. Otherwise, we’d wait a few months for prices to taper further and tilt the Reno2 to its favour further. Just remember that unlike most phone of its class that have some form of water and dust protection rating, the Reno2's design cannot offer such protection.

Archive.org versionA few months after Oppo first introduced its Reno series, the Chinese vendor has now followed this up with the second instalment of the series in the Oppo Reno 2. Coming in at around £449, the Reno 2 falls into the mid-market price category, however it does display some impressive flagship-like features. Oppo revealed at the launch event that it has spent £1 billion on its R & D, so the anticipation for the Reno 2 was high. So how does it stack up?

Archive.org versionThere’s a lot to be commended in the Reno2 - a laudable mid-range handset packed full of flagship features and a premium camera to boot. While there are clear shortcomings, its pricing means it’s a fantastic option if you’re operating on a tight budget.

Archive.org versionThere’s not much wrong with the Oppo Reno 2, and yet in the face of stiff competition, it isn’t the easiest to recommend either. While the premium build and design cohesiveness show a close attention to detail, other phones deliver the same experience. The Color OS software can be polarizing, particularly when the much cleaner build on the OnePlus series delivers a superior experience.

Archive.org versionThe OPPO Reno 2 is a weird character. It's half the price of the current generation of flagship devices. But I can, in good conscience, recommend it just as heartily as I would something like the Samsung Galaxy Note 10. It's not perfect; the display could be better, ColorOS might not be to everyone's taste, and it lacks wireless charging. That said, it gets the fundamentals right. Despite its middle-of-the-pack silicon, it feels slick and fast. The industrial design is solid. And the camera is excellent.

Archive.org versionAnother mid-range phone rolls into town offering an appealing balance between price and performance. Oppo gets a lot right with the Reno 2, but in a section of the market that's increasingly crowded, it perhaps doesn't do enough to be really compelling for buyers.

Archive.org versionOppo Reno 2 is what people might call a device that is much more accessible to the public for the kind of features it offers at the price of Rs 36,990. The device comes with really nice quirks like the shark pop-up camera and the Sound Focus feature, which make it a really interesting proposition at the price. However this will face stiff competition from devices like the OnePlus 7T, Asus ROG Phone 2 and others, which are good smartphones and pack better specifications in some cases. Oppo Reno 2 is a decent smartphone, but the competition is quite stiff in this price range.

Archive.org versionThe Oppo Reno 2 is a decent midrange smartphone that takes good photos, but it falls behind Oppo's own Reno 10x Zoom and a number of other competitors.

Archive.org versionIf the OPPO Reno 2 (or OPPO Reno2 if you prefer) weren’t hampered by an off-putting amount of bloatware, it’d be really great. It’s a beautiful piece of hardware that’s not really failed to perform the vast majority of the time we’ve had to test.

Archive.org versionThe second-generation Reno 2 addresses all of the issues of the first one – the quad-camera setup on the rear take fantastic photos, EIS takes rock-stable videos and performance is solid from the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G processor.

Archive.org versionThe Reno 2 retains the original Reno’s fantastic design, now with a good set of cameras and a good chipset. There are a few issues, though. It’s pretty bulky in the pockets. There are minimal frame drops when gaming and face unlock response is quite slow, but they’re minor issues at best. What makes it difficult to recommend the Reno 2 to users is its price tag of PHP 28,990. For the same price range, you can acquire a flagship smartphone such as the Huawei P30 or the OnePlus 7. Still, if you’re incredibly fond of the shark-fin design and don’t mind the features and its price tag, then the Reno 2 should be right in your hands.

Archive.org versionThe Reno 2 is a premium looking device with a very capable camera system, long battery life and a great display. But with the latest Realme X2 Pro phone having just been announced, even all this good stuff makes the Oppo a little harder to recommend.

Archive.org versionIf you already have any other Oppo smartphone, it's probaby not worth splashing out on the Reno 2. For everyone else, it looks like a good option if you want an Android phone with good cameras, excellent performance and long battery. You may be among those who still do not trust the resilience of motorised cameras. Although we understand your doubts, the wing-shaped design of the Reno 2 seems good and also allows you to have a beautiful screen without notches.

Archive.org versionThe Oppo Reno 2 is a decent mid-range device, offering some of the best features of the Reno range at a competitive price. However it’s not got the processing power or camera skills of some previous Oppo phones, and it doesn’t change the Reno formula in any big way.

Archive.org versionOPPO announced the immediate follow-up to their smartphone, Reno 2 two months ago and today we finally managed to get our hands on the new device. Aside from getting a spec and battery bump, the OPPO Reno 2 also gets new video capabilities which should make it a good addition to any aspiring vlogger’s toolset.

Archive.org versionThere is a lot to like, even love about the Oppo Reno2. We're willing to go as far as to say that there are very few bits we dislike about the Reno2. Some of the major ones are even subjective, like certain design and software package choices within Color OS. However, it is really hard to overlook the current pricing of the phone. As reviewers, we are sometimes guilty of focusing on the tech itself while losing the bigger picture out of sight. And this includes pricing. As things stand right now, the Reno2 is an easy device to love, but not necessarily an easy recommendation to buy and pay for.

Archive.org versionOppo Reno 2 is a natural and much expected successor to the original Reno. It has all the bells and whistles and makes the right noises. However, there are a few caveats that may concern both Oppo and the buyer. The biggest one is the over-hyped 20x zooming camera feature. The smartphone does shoot images at 20x digital zoom but in most cases we found it not useful enough. The use of Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G doesn’t really add up to the mix as it is a processor specifically made for gaming purposes and the handset is not really marketed as a gaming device. Using a new processor and four cameras at the back not just adds to the overall cost here also struggles to justify the overall experience. It will still leave you wanting for more.

Archive.org versionEven with some of the key features of predecessor Reno 10x Zoom dropped, the Oppo Reno 2, priced at Rs 36,990, is a strong product, offering a balanced mix of design, performance, imaging, and everything else that you expect from a midrange smartphone. It might not have flagship specifications, but that does not hinder its performance capabilities. Rather, the phone seems to be a complete package that delivers a comprehensive experience.

Archive.org versionThe Oppo Reno 2 feels very much like the Reno 2Z which we reviewed recently, but it does everything a little better. It packs in more power thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G SoC and is capable of performing your daily duties without slowing down. The camera setup is versatile and there are some interesting new features such as Sound Focus, which works as long as conditions are favourable.

Archive.org versionCompared to the first generation Reno, the Reno 2 brings some solid improvements to the table. The processing power has got a mild boost, there’s oodles of RAM and storage onboard and the camera system has got a definite hardware upgrade. I’m not quite convinced by the camera tuning, but that might change with updates over the course of the review. Overall, the Reno 2 seems to be a step forward, rather than a leap ahead and doesn’t bring enough to justify upgrading from the first generation Oppo Reno.

Archive.org versionTo conclude, the Reno 2 is a well-designed smartphone from Oppo. The hidden rear cameras at the back give a quite decent look and the display is quite immersive in nature. The hardware seems to be decent as well and the camera looks promising. Overall, the phone seems to be a good attempt from the company, though, with this price tag, it will face a stiff competition with the likes of OnePlus 7 and Redmi K20 Pro, which offers the latest flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor along with other top-notch features.

Model:
There are smartphones that combine a flagship design and midrange internals in order to keep the costs down, e.g. the Xiaomi Mi Note 10, which features the world’s first 108-megapixel smartphone camera sensor despite the middling chipset powering it, is definitely a perfectly example for this scenario. Similarly, the Oppo Reno 2 has entered the market combining a flagship design with a minimum of four cameras around the back and an incorporation of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G processor, just like the Mi Note 10. The processor is definitely not the best option for gaming capabilities when compared with the much more advanced Snapdragon 855 processor, which has been incorporated within the OnePlus TT and the Realme X2 Pro. However, the Oppo Reno 2 can cater up to 256 GB of internal storage for its mid-range price.
As far as the screen and display are concerned, it provides an all-screen display with a completely futuristic approach for smartphones. The phone also comes with a total of 8 GB of RAM and a bigger 4,000mAh battery. The battery size caters for a longer battery life and better user experience, as there will not be much hassle or the need for frequent charging. Apart from that, the Oppo Reno 2 has been built with an under-display fingerprint scanner. Again, these features are provided for such an affordable price. In addition, the array of cameras within the smartphone is quite similar to that found in the much more expensive iPhone 11 Pro. These include one wide camera, one ultra-wide camera, one zoom camera and a 2-megapixel monochrome camera which gathers all the needed information for portrait effects. This helps cater for an immersive, premium user experience while taking great pictures.
Despite all its added features, the Oppo Reno 2 might still not be the best camera phone out there due to the absence of the 5x optical zoom of the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom and Huawei P30 Pro. There is also a lack of OIS on the telephoto camera, and its 4K video recording is definitely beatable by much better options out there. However, it is an undeniable fact that the Oppo Reno 2 is indeed one of the best budget camera phones available on the market at the moment. This is not just the mere opinion of some reviewers, but rather a lived-by experience by users. The reason for such a statement would be due to the ability of the phone to capture photos with a reasonable amount of detail and punch to it under good light settings irrespective of the camera utilized.
The Oppo Reno 2 is available in two colors, Ocean Blue or Luminous and Black. Despite having limited options in color variants, this smartphone can never be ignored for its affordability and the features that come with it.
