Reviews for the Samsung Galaxy A72
Samsung has relaunched its mid-range top model: The Galaxy A72 is even better than the already strong predecessor and has, among other things, the larger battery and better cameras. As the review shows, the Galaxy A72 should also be the standard against which all mid-range rivals have to measure themselves this year.

Archive.org versionAlthough it overall behind the Oppo Reno6 5G and the Xiaomi 11T, which both offer a better charging experience, the Samsung Galaxy A72 battery has the best autonomy in its segment.

Archive.org versionAnnounced in March 2021, the Snapdragon 720G-powered Samsung Galaxy A72 looks like an enticing option in the High-end ($400-599) segment, offering a comprehensive camera setup with a Quad-Bayer sensor in the primary module as well as a 3x tele, a 12 MP ultra-wide, and a dedicated macro camera. Let’s see how it fares in the DXOMARK Camera test protocol.

Archive.org versionAs it turns out, the Samsung Galaxy A72 is not too different from the Galaxy A52, and that's a problem. The telephoto camera is a nice addition but I didn't find it very useful since its image quality was average at best. Other than this, you're paying a premium over the Galaxy A52 for a slightly larger battery and the bundled 25W charger. It's hard to justify spending at least Rs. 34,999 for the Galaxy A72 when you can get nearly the same performance and features with the Galaxy A52 at Rs. 26,499, and some phones priced under Rs. 30,000 offer even better specifications and capabilities. If the Samsung name and features such as the IP rating and stereo speakers are what drew you towards the Galaxy A72, I'd suggest buying the Galaxy A52 instead and saving some money. If you absolutely want to spend more, then any of the above competitors would be a better buy.

Archive.org versionWe think Samsung has shown some major guts in launching the Galaxy A72 with a starting price of Rs. 34,999. The phone not only comes with an older processor but also does not really bring anything too unique to the table. Yes, we love the design; the cameras and display are very good, and the battery life is impressive, but there is a lot of competition lurking around at that price point. There is the Mi 11X which comes with a Snapdragon 870 at around Rs 30,000, as does the iQOO 7. And well, there will be those who might think of the OnePlus 9R, the Vivo X60, which cost a little more but come with better processors and equally formidable specs. And well, all of those worthies also bring 5G to the table, which is a welcome bonus.

Archive.org versionThe Galaxy A72 is aimed at those who have a budget of higher than Rs 35,000, and want a phone with a good camera. The phone is also more affordable compared to other mid-range flagships such as vivo X60 (Rs 39,990), OnePlus 9R (Rs 39,999). However, the recently launched Mi 11X costs Rs 29,999 and undercuts the A72 in pricing.

Archive.org versionSo bottom line then - just like the Galaxy A52, the A72 is a truly unique package, even on the current over-saturated mid-ranger scene. That being said, its value relies on a very particular mix of features. If it just happens to be something that resonates with you, there really is no reason to look elsewhere.

Archive.org versionNow that we’ve talked about almost everything, let’s finally focus on price. The Samsung Galaxy A72 is officially available for PHP 23,990. And as I’ve mentioned, it’s quite in a risky spot because first, it only got minimal improvements from its predecessor the A71, then there’s the competition in its price range with other phones offering better performance and cameras. It does however give the advantage of being a familiar Samsung device with an attractive design and large battery capacity.

Archive.org versionThe Galaxy A72 nails the basics: you get a sublime 90Hz AMOLED display, minimal design with pastel hues, robust hardware, reliable cameras at the back, a 5000mAh battery, and long-term software updates. But the fact that there's no 5G here makes it a non-starter in global markets, and you also have to contend with a lot of bloatware.

Archive.org versionOur review of the Galaxy A72 for the Philippines shows that the phablet is the most value-packed Samsung mid-range phone to date. Additions like a bigger battery, telephoto camera, high refresh rate, and an IP rating made the Galaxy A72 a compelling offering—and arguably one of Samsung’s best mid-range phones in recent memory.

Archive.org versionIn our opinion, the Galaxy A52 is a much better pick than the Galaxy A72 as both of them have almost everything in common except a camera sensor, and display & battery size. The Galaxy A72 is also a decent phone but at that price, you have better options and even the differences between the two are not worth spending Rs 8500 more on the Galaxy A72.

Archive.org versionThe Samsung Galaxy A72 is a cheery phone, or at least that’s the picture the company wants to paint for it. While the names of its colours can rub people the wrong way (it certainly did for me), it’s difficult to counter the point that the phone is a fine mid-range device, at least by today’s standards. The unique back is a minor plus point, but the IP67 rating is, in my opinion, the bigger and better deal.

Archive.org versionAbsolutely – but the price is obviously at a premium here since you’re getting the best experience available on a mid-range smartphone. At RM1,899 – I think it’s a little steep and inching close to the Galaxy S20 FE 4G’s current price of RM2,099.

Archive.org versionI can’t deny that there’s a bunch of important upgrades and the Galaxy A72 does have a lot to offer, but you may look the other way if you’re aiming for a 5G phone. Apart from that, the phone looks great, performs well and has a long-lasting battery life. It’s a decent phone if you don’t mind the lacking performance in lowlight photography and the absence of 5G support.

Archive.org versionLast year, the midrange Galaxy A71 was a success and became quite popular. Now, its successor is here, bringing significant improvements to the table, with a smooth 90Hz high refresh rate, a bigger 5,000mAh battery, and a versatile camera system. All of these cool features are packed under a gorgeous new look the Galaxy A72 sports, with fresh and youthful colors. There is a smaller improvement in the processor capabilities and its performance is not a giant step forward from the Galaxy A71, but despite that, the A72 is a good investment for anyone wanting a smooth Samsung phone, with great battery life and a capable camera for the affordable price of $430.

Archive.org versionThe Galaxy A72, like the Galaxy A52, is a mid-range phone that offers a high-end experience. You get an excellent display with 90Hz refresh rate that makes for smooth scrolling and animations, water and dust resistance, stereo speakers, a zoom camera capable of up to 30x magnification, the latest software out of the box along with a guarantee of three major OS upgrades, and mostly excellent performance with the Snapdragon 720G processor.
