The rumored Xbox Cloud Gaming controller is in danger. New information alleges Microsoft canceled a similar device during the Activision Blizzard acquisition. Time limits for Game Pass subscribers and other restrictions threaten the streaming service's growth.

Earlier in 2026, a leak from a Brazilian regulator revealed a new wireless Xbox controller in development. The accessory would connect directly to Microsoft’s cloud gaming network to reduce latency. However, reports suggest the company has now shelved the device. Meanwhile, hourly limits and higher prices cast doubt on the service's future.

Impact of a controversial acquisition

The New York Times explains how even before the Xbox Cloud Gaming changes, the rumored controller faced obstacles. The article claims the Activision Blizzard acquisition in 2023 raised fears about Microsoft’s streaming dominance. Ubisoft hosting Activision’s content and partnering with Boosteroid and Nvidia alleviated those concerns.

While the deal went through, the manufacturer may have sacrificed the Xbox controller. Still, adding to the confusion, Kotaku says a Microsoft spokesperson denied the cancellation. The peripheral's status is unclear, but the May 2026 leak gives hope it could reemerge.

The Tecnoblog website showed the hardware in black-and-white colorways. Despite being more compact than Core or Elite designs, it offered the usual button layout. Most importantly, WiFi 6 connectivity to Xbox Cloud Gaming servers could minimize input delays. Normally, commands register on smartphones or other devices first, often via Bluetooth.

Who would buy a cloud gaming controller?

Considering developments with the streaming service, fewer buyers may be interested in the accessory. Starting in November 2026, Game Pass tiers will impose monthly caps, ranging from 5 to 15 hours. Adding hours costs extra, and Ultimate subscriptions already demand $23 every 30 days.

Owners of 2020 Samsung Smart TVs also learned that the displays would no longer support cloud gaming. Regardless, it’s possible Xbox CEO Asha Sharma hasn’t given up on the idea. In February 2026, the executive praised it as a way to expand the company’s reach. Amid rising console prices, the alternative remains a cheaper option for some consumers.

Whether Microsoft continues to invest in the technology may decide the fate of the leaked Xbox controller.
