Kioxia has announced that its latest flash memory adheres to the latest JEDEC standard for modules of its type. This new eMMC 5.1-compatible BiCS FLASH product is thus rated to get sequential and random write speeds of up to 2.5 times compared to its forebear, as well as up to 2.7 times the performance of the same.
The new BiCS FLASH memory is also backed to do better than its predecessor at a "number of terabytes written" test by "a factor of 3.3". It also integrates a controller in a housing rated to improve the user experience, and also to further reduce any strain on the processor in question.
On the other hand, this new and apparently cutting-edge "3D flash memory" comes in sizes of just 64GB or 128GB, and may, as the OEM suggests, be best suited to next-gen residential devices such as smart TVs or network interface cards (smart NICs) as well as some tablets or certain PCs.
Kioxia projects that its new BiCS FLASH will be available to customers by October 2024, and that the first devices to integrate it will be available by early 2024.
