Garmin smartwatches and bike computers get new Komoot maps feature
Komoot has announced a new enhanced navigation tool for Garmin devices: Komoot maps. Previously, Komoot users had to choose between using Komoot navigation on their phone or Komoot Tour lines layered onto Garmin’s maps.
Komoot claims the main benefits of its new tool are more detailed maps showing various trails, roads and rivers. The maps come with turn-by-turn navigation, shown with white arrows, and you can add audible alerts or vibrations on your watch to let you know when to turn. You can also zoom and move around the map, select between light or dark modes and choose to display two data fields such as average heart rate and current pace. However, early users have flagged several problems with the tool, which essentially disconnects you from the rest of the Garmin system. Specific issues include restricted data, a lack of re-routing if you veer off course and slower loading speeds.
A wide range of Garmin bike computers and smartwatches support the new tool, such as the Edge 1040 and the Fenix 7 Solar. It is worth noting that low-memory watches, like the Forerunner 245 (standard), are not compatible; a complete list of supported devices can be found at the CiQ store. You can access Komoot maps via the latest versions of the Komoot app, v4.3.8 or higher, available to download from the Connect IQ store. While the feature will only be available to Komoot Premium subscribers in the future, all customers can test the new tool until December 28th.
