Garmin has released another beta update for the Edge 1050 (curr. $698 on Amazon), which continues to be the company's latest bike computer. For context, it recently introduced what we described as an extensive update for the same device, full details of which we have covered separately.
Typically, an update of this size would be what Garmin eventually issues as a new stable update. However, the company has now replaced Public Beta 11.17 with a revision change, which it is rolling out to Beta Program participants as Public Beta 11.18.
In short, the new update contains more changes than its minor build number change would suggest. Notably, Public Beta 11.18 adds remote media controls, which allows Edge 1050 owners to configure shifter buttons for media playback control as needed. Moreover, Garmin has introduced new SRAM gear presets for 13-speed gravel groupsets.
Meanwhile, the new update switches the terminology for Shimano STEPS to 'Shimano E-bike', presumably for greater clarity. On top of that, Public Beta 11.18 addresses a few bugs that were present in its predecessor. For example, Garmin claims to have fixed a problem where the screen would display static or 'snow' when the Edge 1050 is powering up.
Furthermore, it should be possible once again to use the bell while audio prompts are playing. Finally, Garmin believes it has resolved its 'Back to Course' calculation in cases where a u-turn was required. Please see Garmin's forum post for more information.
