Garmin X40 Edge bike computers get new remote media controls in latest beta update
Garmin is rolling out new public beta software for the Edge 540, Edge 840, and Edge 1040 bike computers. Version 25.18 is another iteration of the Q4 update, announced earlier in November, with a few new features and bug fixes.
The public beta version 25.18 is said to add new remote media controls to these X40 Edge devices, allowing you to use the shifter buttons to control your music or podcast. There are new SRAM gear presets tailored to 13-speed gravel groupsets. Plus, Shimano STEPS is now referred to as Shimano E-bike. On top of this, there are bug fixes for graphical data fields and the Back to Course feature where a U-turn is necessary.
As with the earlier Q4 update, you will first need to install software version 24.54 if you have not already. This updates your gadget to use MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) for file transfers. You can do this by connecting your Edge computer to Wi-Fi, then going to Main Menu > System > About > Check for Updates and selecting Software Update 24.54. After this has been downloaded and installed, your device should reboot. Once this step is complete, you can proceed with the update to version 25.18 for your Edge 540, Edge 840 or Edge 1040 (curr. $499.54 at Amazon).
