Garmin begins X40 Edge bike computer Q4 update rollout
Garmin has announced a Q4 update for the Edge 540, Edge 840 and Edge 1040 bike computers. The software, currently rolling out in beta form, brings a range of features, improvements and bug fixes to the devices.
There is a change in how these X40 Edge series devices connect to a PC, with an update for them to use the Media Transfer Protocol (MTP). Garmin says that this improves file security. As such, there is an unusual update process associated with this change. X40 Edge users are asked to install beta version 24.54 first by going to Main Menu > System > About > Check for Updates, then letting your device reboot. This will update your device to use MTP. You can then follow the same process for beta version 25.17 to receive the other new features and bug fixes.
The change log for beta version 25.17 states that the electronic shifting over-shift sound has been restored, and the old Functional Threshold Power (FTP) test has been removed. Lactate Threshold estimates are now automatic, provided you record a heart rate when working out. Plus, there is a new confirmation message when you successfully pair an altimeter manually. The full change log for beta version 25.17 for the Edge 540, Edge 840 and Edge 1040 cycling computers is below.
