AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution FSR 3 will be a major update to FSR 2 and will introduce what the company calls "AMD Fluid Motion Frames" (AFMF), a technology that is equivalent to Nvidia's DLSS 3 Frame Generation.
FSR 3 will be coming to several games this fall the likes of which include Forspoken, Immortals of Avenum, Avatar: Frontiers - Pandora, and Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty among others. Although AMD is yet to fully detail various aspects of FSR 3, the new upscaling tech will be supported on AMD Radeon RX 5700 and above, Nvidia GeForce RTX 20 series and above. Cards lower than these, such as the Radeon RX 590 and GeForce GTX 10 series, can support FSR 3, but they are not capable of frame generation.
FSR 3 will also see the introduction of a native anti-aliasing (Native AA) mode that is similar to Nvidia's DLAA. And just like DLSS 3 frame generation, FSR 3's fluid motion frames will require enabling Radeon Anti-Lag+ in the driver. FSR 3 will continue to offer modes such as Quality, Balanced, and Performance that determine the quality and performance of the upscale.
During the Gamescom event, AMD didn't delve specifically on Starfield, which is among the biggest games to arrive this year. However, the company's gaming chief Frank Azor confirmed to The Verge that they aren't restricting Bethesda from including DLSS support in Starfield. Azor said that prioritization for FSR is more of a request than a demand.
Money absolutely exchanges hands. When we do bundles, we ask them: ‘Are you willing to prioritize FSR?’ If they ask us for DLSS support, we always tell them yes... Bethesda’s decision to use FSR is console leverage. If and when Bethesda wants to put DLSS into the game, they have our full support."
Apart from FSR, AMD also offers Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) that is a feature of the Adrenalin driver. These drivers will now support HYPR-RX, which is essentially a combination of Radeon Boost, Anti-Lag+, and RSR.
HYPR-RX will also include support for fluid motion frames sans the FSR mode. All DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games are supported. HYPR-RX with fluid motion frames and Anti-Lag+ is supported only on RDNA 3 dGPUs and iGPUs such as the Radeon 780M.
According to Azor, HYPR-RX is all set to launch with the Adrenalin driver update scheduled for early September while HYPR-RX with fluid motion frames will arrive some time in Q1 2024.
