Dell XPS 14 vapor chamber comes in clutch for faster performance than the Framework Laptop 13 Pro

Panther Lake is proving to be one of Intel's better CPU series in years especially with regards to the Core Ultra X7 358H. The latter has become a staple on many prosumer subnotebooks including the recent 14-inch Dell XPS 14 and 13.5-inch Framework Laptop 13 Pro. Performance, however, can still vary widely depending on the model.
Our benchmarks below compare the aforementioned Framework and Dell systems each equipped with the same Core Ultra X7 CPU. The Dell system comes out ahead in all cases ranging from raw multi-thread performance to integrated Arc B390 graphics performance and even RAM performance despite the pricier LPCAMM2 solution in the Framework. Furthermore, the differences aren't insignificant with graphics performance in particular running up to 30 percent faster on the Dell.
The wide discrepancy can be largely attributed to cooling solution differences. While the Dell utilizes dual fans and a vapor chamber cooler, the Framework Laptop 13 Pro utilizes almost the same small cooling solution as found on the original Laptop 13.5 back in 2021. Unsurprisingly, core temperatures average much warmer on the Framework than the Dell when under load (92 C vs. 74 C) leading to longer Turbo Boost potential and generally faster clock rates for the Dell.
Of course, performance is only one part of the equation when comparing machines. Check out our review on the Framework Laptop 13 Pro for more benchmark comparisons.
