5G hype or real added value: What are users missing out on with a 4G smartphone?

Pretty, bright and long battery life, but no 5G. Is the Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 4G really worth it?
Pretty, bright and long battery life, but no 5G. Is the Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 4G really worth it?
Even seven years after the introduction of 5G, there are still smartphones without the latest mobile standard. But is that really so bad? We'll take a look at the Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 4G to see if the lack of 5G in everyday use is even noticeable.

In 2019, the first mobile networks were equipped with the new 5G technology. Since then, no high-end smartphone has done without the latest mobile technology. But given that LTE networks are often "masked" as 5G and there's a significant price difference compared to 5G models, the question arises: Can you actually tell the difference between 5G and 4G in everyday use?

Our test device

We looked into this using a Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 4G. Hailing from Xiaomi's popular Redmi Note series, which traditionally covers the mid-range market, the Redmi Note 15 4G is the budget model and, as indicated by the name, doesn't support 5G.

In everyday use, you don't notice this at first, apart from the fact that 4G and not 5G is displayed next to the reception indicator in the status bar at the top. 5G network coverage in Germany, where we carried out our tests, is now pretty good, with 4G still filling in some larger gaps.

The theory

In theory, 5G is incredibly fast: speeds of up to 20 Gbit/s are possible, but individual users are more likely to experience around 100 Mbit/s in practice. Compared to LTE Advanced, the advantages here are more theoretical than practical. 5G may offer slightly lower latency in real-world use.

5G also offers advantages in large crowds, as significantly more people can surf the internet simultaneously. Furthermore, the network's reliability is said to be excellent. For this reason, the network is also expected to be ideal for autonomous driving.

In practice

But do we notice a difference with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 4G compared to a 5G phone? Absolutely.

We carried out some tests with the Redmi Note 15 4G and the Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G in the same location and with the same SIM card. The 5G network proved significantly faster. So, it's worth paying the extra cost. However, this is just a sample test; the results may vary in other locations or at other times.

What else the Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 4G can do

Despite lacking 5G connectivity, the Redmi Note 15 4G is still a solid choice. Especially if you're on a budget for a new smartphone, as it offers long battery life, an extremely bright display and six years of security updates.
