What Xiaomi doesn’t tell you about the Redmi Note 15 Pro Plus: HyperOS can be annoying

In our upcoming review of the Redmi Note 15 Pro Plus , Xiaomi scored with an interesting mix of stylish mid-range design and some rugged features. However, the phone also comes with some caveats. When it comes to software, Xiaomi generally does a decent job by promising six years of software updates as well as major updates including Android 19. However, one issue was particularly annoying and hasn’t been this noticeable in the past, namely ads.
Mid-range Xiaomi phone is an ad platform
It’s nothing new that HyperOS has built-in ads, but during our review of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 Pro Plus, we were negatively surprised by the volume and variety. We regularly noticed low-quality ads and product placements in system apps that are found on the home screen. We even got ads for promotional products, such as hearing aids, that were opened in the browser. For a smartphone with an MSRP of €519, that’s difficult to justify.
Fortunately, these annoying pop-ups in Xiaomi’s own user interface can be disabled fairly easily, at least for the most part. That said, we couldn’t find a way to permanently remove ads in the file manager.
Most ads can be turned off in the settings menu. In the "Fingerprints" menu, users can further disable personalized ads. In addition, it’s recommended to turn off "recommendations" or "personalized ads" in system apps, for example in the Music and Video Player apps.
