Honor MagicBook Pro review: Compact 16.1-inch allrounder with a good battery life

Intel/Nvidia or AMD? The MagicBook Pro offers a well-rounded level of equipment: a Core i5 processor, a GeForce MX350 GPU, 16 GB of working memory (dual-channel mode), an NVMe SSD, and a matte IPS display. All this is accompanied by a very good battery life.

With the MagicBook Pro, Honor offers a compact 16.1-inch allrounder that is run by a Core i5-10210U processor and a GeForce MX350 graphics core. Competitors include devices such as the Xiaomi RedmiBook 16 R5, the Asus VivoBook S15 S533EQ, the Schenker Vision 15, the Acer Aspire 5 A515-56, and the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15IIL05.

Because we already tested a sibling model that shares the identical build, we will not report here in more detail on the case, equipment, input devices, speakers, or the display. You can find the corresponding information in our review of the AMD model of the MagicBook Pro.

Display - IPS onboard

The brightness (317.2 cd/m²) and contrast (1356:1) of the matte 16.1-inch display (FHD, IPS) turn out good and the viewing angles are stable. It offers a great color reproduction already in the state of delivery. At brightness levels of 32% or less, the display shows flickering at a frequency of 25000 Hz.

This is the same panel that is also in the AMD MagicBook Pro. Nonetheless, the measured values are slightly different, but this is normal, since two panels of an identical build are never completely the same.

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.
       Response Time Black to White
22 ms ... rise ↗ and fall ↘ combined↗ 12.4 ms rise
↘ 9.6 ms fall
The screen shows good response rates in our tests, but may be too slow for competitive gamers.
In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.1 (minimum) to 240 (maximum) ms. » 42 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is similar to the average of all tested devices (21.5 ms).
Response Time 50% Grey to 80% Grey
35.2 ms ... rise ↗ and fall ↘ combined↗ 17.2 ms rise
↘ 18 ms fall
The screen shows slow response rates in our tests and will be unsatisfactory for gamers.
In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.2 (minimum) to 636 (maximum) ms. » 43 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is similar to the average of all tested devices (33.7 ms).

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.
Screen flickering / PWM detected 25000 Hz ≤ 32 % brightness setting

The display backlight flickers at 25000 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 32 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting.

The frequency of 25000 Hz is quite high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17900 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured.

Performance - Honor did not use the most current hardware

With the MagicBook Pro, Honor delivers an allrounder laptop in the 16.1-inch format. The built-in hardware offers more than sufficient performance for office and Internet applications. In addition, it also allows playing computer games to a limited extent.

Test Conditions

The MagicBook Pro offers to power profiles: Performance mode and Standard mode. The Performance mode is only available in mains operation when the battery is charged at least 20%. After each restart of the laptop, Standard mode is automatically activated. Using the "Fn" + "P" key combination, you can change between the modes. We used Performance mode during our testing. The battery tests were run using Standard mode.

Alternatively, you can also change between the profiles using the preinstalled PC Manager software, where the modes are labeled "Performance" and "Balanced."

Processor

The Core i5-10210U quad-core processor (Comet Lake) runs at a basic clock speed of 1.6 GHz. Via Turbo, this can be increased up to 3.9 GHz (four cores) and 4.2 GHz (single core). Hyperthreading (two Threads per core) is supported.

The processor runs through the multi-thread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmark at 3.9 GHz for a short time, before the clock speed drops to between 3.4 and 3.5 GHz. During the single-thread tests it runs at 3.9 to 4.1 GHz. In battery operation, the clock speeds range between 1.8 and 2.6 GHz (multi-thread) and 1.4 to 3.4 GHz (single-thread).

Multi-thread (mains operation)
Multi-thread (mains operation)
Single-thread (mains operation)
Single-thread (mains operation)

We evaluate whether the CPU Turbo is used constantly in mains operation by running the multi-thread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmark for at least 30 minutes in a constant loop. The Turbo operates within a medium clock speed range.

System Performance

The fast and smoothly running system offers more than sufficient computing performance for office and Internet applications. The dedicated graphics core also allows playing computer games to a limited extent. This is accompanied by decent PC-Mark results. The working memory (16 GB, DDR4-2666, onboard) runs in dual-channel mode and cannot be expanded.

Storage Solution

The MagicBook Pro is equipped with a 512-GB NVMe SSD (M.2 2280) from Kioxia that offers very good transfer rates. Unnecessarily, Honor has partitioned the available storage space into a Windows (119 GB, 76 GB available) and a data partition (337 GB).

While the laptop offers space for a 2.5-inch storage medium, since there is neither the necessary SATA slot nor an included insertion frame, you would be unable to insert the corresponding drive.

An SSD serves as the system drive.

Graphics Card

The GeForce MX350 graphics core (Pascal) is based on the GeForce GTX-1050 GPU. However, the graphics memory (GDDR5, 2048 MB) is only connected via 64 Bit instead of a 128-Bit connection. The GPU is a phased-out midrange model whose more powerful successor (GeForce MX450) is already available.

The results in the 3D-Mark benchmarks range at a normal level for the GPU used here. The integrated Intel UHD Graphics-620 GPU is active and the laptop uses Nvidia's Optimus graphics switching solution.

Gaming Performance

The MagicBook Pro brings most games that are in our database smoothly to the screen - in low resolution and at low to medium quality levels. Games with moderate demands allow more, but performance-hungry hits such as "Cyberpunk 2077" and "Assassin´s Creed Valhalla" don't achieve any playable frame rates, even at low resolution and quality settings.

In order to evaluate whether the frame rates also remain largely constant over a longer time period, we run the game "The Witcher 3" for about 60 minutes in Full-HD resolution and at maximum quality settings without moving the gaming character. We do not observe any drop in the performance, and the GPU constantly runs at its top speed.

Emissions - The MagicBook is able to run quietly

Noise Emissions

The built-in fans are practically inaudible in everyday operation. During idle operation or under low load, they often remain turned off and there is complete silence.  The fans only rev up audibly under heavier load, and we register a maximum noise level of 44 dB(A) (stress test) or 40 dB(A) (Witcher 3 test).

At higher revving speeds, we hear a subtle high-frequency whistling - just as in the AMD sibling model. While this is basically bearable, whether it becomes subjectively annoying might be a matter of individual tolerance. When the "Standard" mode is activated, the laptop produces less noise overall.

Temperature

The CPU and GPU run through our stress test (Prime95 and Furmark running for at least one hour) at 1800 MHz and 1493 MHz respectively. The stress test represents an extreme scenario that we use to evaluate whether the system also remains stable under full load.

The laptop warms up noticeably. During the stress test we measure temperatures in the mid to high 40s range Celsius (113 - 120 °F) at several measurement points. The heat development turns out lower when running our Witcher 3 test. In everyday operation, the temperatures remain within the green range.

Verdict

The Honor MagicBook Pro (Intel, Nvidia). Test unit provided by Honor UK.
The Honor MagicBook Pro (Intel, Nvidia). Test unit provided by Honor UK.

With the MagicBook Pro, Honor delivers an elegant and compact 16.1-inch allrounder that is available with hardware from AMD as well as from Intel/Nvidia. The differences are easy to tell: The AMD model offers more CPU performance and the Intel/Nvidia model, more graphics performance.

Honor creates a well-rounded package with the MagicBook Pro that offers a good price-performance ratio. This goes for the AMD as well as the Intel/Nvidia model.

Thanks to a Core i5-10210U processor and GeForce MX350 graphics core, the equipment configuration in our test unit is well-suited for the office, Internet, and to a limited extent, also gaming. 16 GB of working memory (dual-channel mode, on board, not expandable) and a 512-GB NVMe SSD represent an adequate amount of storage.

In battery operation, the laptop lasts for a long time: the battery used (56 Wh) ensures a runtime of 10 to 11 hours in practice. The laptop is charged using the included USB-C charger. The display (FHD, IPS) is pleasing with stable viewing angles, a matte surface, a very good color reproduction, and decent color space coverage. The brightness and contrast fall within the required range. The illuminated keyboard turns out to be suitable for everyday tasks.

The Intel/Nvidia MagicBook Pro not only offers the same strengths as its AMD counter part, but also the same weaknesses: At high revving speeds, the fans produce a subtle, high-frequency whistle, and the working memory cannot be expanded. The keyboard illumination also could have been brighter, and it lacks a storage card reader.

Price and Availibility

The Honor MagicBook Pro is shown in the Honor Shop at a price of 849 Euros (~$1002), but not always available in all regions. Global shops such as TradingShenzen offer various models of the MagicBook Pro starting at $785.
