Gamers might think Activision would have concerns over the hype surrounding Battlefield 6. Even before the servers open, SteamDB recorded nearly 25,000 players waiting to play the open beta. However, an Insider Gaming report suggests that the Call of Duty publisher is far from panicking. With Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 approaching, Activision sees the franchise as “too big to fail”.
The source who spoke with Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson is confident in the annual release model of the shooter game. Although there were signs of slowing sales, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 attracted a large player base, in part thanks to Xbox Game Pass. Still, the title had its share of critics who complained about launch bugs and uninspiring map designs.
Based on the past performance of the Battlefield and Call of Duty series, Activision may have the upper hand on EA. A common perception is that the more fast-paced Call of Duty action appeals to novices. Meanwhile, Battlefield games often feature large and complex environments, requiring calculated strategies for success.
EA also faced scrutiny with Battlefield 2042, which suffered from numerous technical glitches. That contributed to its decision to launch the first Battlefield 6 playtest well ahead of its arrival. Despite its private status, leaks immediately emerged, with some changes exciting prospective players. Besides improved graphics, elements like destructive scenery have intrigued audiences. After beta tests conclude, the Battlefield 6 release date is set for October 10th.
By contrast, less is known about Black Ops 7, which rumors hint will debut in November. The franchise normally enjoys a blistering marketing campaign, but advertising is not yet in full swing. Activision will wait until Gamescom on August 19th for the official reveal. Depending on what attendees see, the shooter game could regain some enthusiasm lost to Battlefield 6.
