Developers previously suggested that Battlefield 6 skins would adhere to a military theme. That assured fans that they wouldn't encounter the outlandish cosmetics seen in first-person shooter rivals. However, a recently leaked skin has some gamers less optimistic.
As Game Rant reports, SpiritualBacon shared a much-discussed Reddit post with the operator skin in question. Most readers agree that the neon green striped outfit is fairly tame. Still, it's non-traditional enough, compared to authentic military gear, to raise questions. Some critics worry that the developers will become too casual with content that follows the Battlefield 6 full release.
Battlefield 2042 featured some zany soldier skins, including one paying tribute to Santa Claus. Still, the Call of Duty series traditionally takes more risks with its designs, often using celebrities as inspiration.
Black Ops 7 may stick to more basic skins
Feeling the heat from its own player base, developer Treyarch decided not to allow skins from Black Ops 6 to transition to Black Ops 7. Even so, it recently backtracked on that promise. Some premium Zombie-related clothing will appear in the upcoming first-person shooter.
The Battlefield and Call of Duty debates expose the delicate balancing acts developers have with cosmetics. Premium character skins can often sustain games well after their release dates. Also, offering themed gear based on movies or TV shows may entice different audiences to try somewhat intimidating shooter games.
On the other hand, companies risk alienating hardcore players who prioritize realism. The problem for developers is that there are only so many authentic operator, vehicle, and weapon skins to use for inspiration. Battlefield fans fear that once ideas run out, unconventional cosmetics will return.
