Counter-Strike 2 players have recently had to contend with one of the most convincing scams ever to target traders and collectors alike.

A new Steam game, Plumber’s Legacy, has ignited serious concern among the Counter-Strike 2 and wider trading community after users discovered in-game items that copied expensive CS2 knives and skins.

These imitation skins were nearly identical to genuine CS2 items and had allegedly been used by scammers to trick unsuspecting players into trading real CS2 skins worth, in some cases, thousands of dollars.

On July 2, community member Ozzny warned players of the scam on X. Screenshots began circulating, showcasing trade offers for a “Butterfly Knife | Marble Fade” and a “Karambit Damascus Steel.” Upon closer inspection, it became evident that these items were not from CS2 but “Plumber’s Legacy”.

In response to the mounting pressure, the developers of Plumber’s Legacy quickly took down the game from the Steam Marketplace. They also replaced the stolen artwork and renamed the knock-off items to generic names like “just a crazy sword.” This looked like an attempt to hide the scam, which had already been exposed.

SteamDB archived the game’s history, documented the in-game items to give an idea of the scam’s scope, and marked the game as “suspicious”. The game had an all-time peak of 19 players on July 1 and listed both previously mentioned knives for 99 USD on the Steam Marketplace.

Legitimate CS2 skins can easily fetch prices from hundreds to thousands of dollars. The Marble Blade Butterfly Knife in “Factory New” condition sells for between 1,900 and 2,000 USD. Similarly, a Damascus Steel Karambit can sell for between 1,000 and 1,200 USD. Community members are baffled, calling it the “most convincing scam yet.”

Plumber’s Legacy just goes to show the vulnerabilities in Steam’s trading system, especially when the financial stakes are considerably high. Trading scams have been widespread in the Counter-Strike community, including built-for-scamming third-party trading marketplaces and fake Steam login pages used to phish user credentials.
