Quantic Dream is known for making games that try to tell deep, impactful stories. Beyond: Two Souls, released way back in 2013 for the PS3 and later for PS4 and PC, was a title where the studio aimed to tell a thrilling story about a girl, Jodie Holmes, and her connection with a faceless spirit.
Beyond: Two Souls, like all Quantic Dream games, is narrative-first and gameplay-second. This means that gameplay is in service to the story and takes a backseat. So, Beyond: Two Souls is for players who enjoy games that are more focused on telling a story than being fun to play.
If you are one such fan, Beyond: Two Souls is retailing for just $1.99 thanks to the Steam Summer Sale. This is a massive 90% discount on the full price.
Beyond: Two Souls tells a cinematic story
Like any narrative-driven, psychological thriller, Beyond: Two Souls’ main selling point is its story. Players see life through the perspective of Jodie Holmes, played by Elliot Page, and explore her connection with a spirit she calls “Aiden”. Through Aiden, Jodie exists in both the physical and the ethereal worlds, which makes her life anything but ordinary.
Beyond: Two Souls asks players to understand the world through Jodie’s struggles, her interactions with other humans, her romantic life, and so on. Players also get to see the world through Aiden, which opens up a variety of gameplay options. From going through walls to causing mayhem, Aiden is always present by Jodie’s side. But this presence is a double-edged sword, as it can throw a wrench in the otherwise normal life that Jodie wants to lead.
As explained above, Beyond: Two Souls is a game where gameplay takes a backseat. As such, players have limited freedom in how they move, interact, and communicate with the world. For instance, there are action sequences, but the game only allows limited engagement, mainly through timing-based QTEs (Quick Time Events). In this way, Beyond: Two Souls is more of an interactive drama than a full-blown video game.
Whatever category you place Beyond: Two Souls in, the game is, according to GameSpot, “a gripping adventure that doesn't get lost in its supernatural setup”. For just $1.99, the game is, despite its shortcomings, a must-play.
