Xiaomi's version of Android 16 for its next-gen flagship Android smartphones might be re-branded to HyperOS 26. The rumor is given weight by others suggesting that Apple is about to do the same with the next major version of iOS. The 'former HyperOS 3' is thought to launch later in 2025 with the brand's most AI- and IoT-capable mobile UI to date.

Apple is thought to introduce its next software for iPhones as iOS 26 - which, as the latest version currently running on devices such as the 16 Pro Max is 18.5, might seem a little odd.

Nevertheless, the alleged change is thought to take effect in less than 24 hours from now at WWDC 2025.

The Cupertino giant's apparent decision to tie its iOS (and also iPadOS and MacOS) versions to the year of their release might come to be mimicked by rival brands in short order - starting with Xiaomi, according to a new leak.

HyperOS has only been around for 2 generations thus far, following its rise from the ashes of the OEM's original MIUI for Android smartphones and tablets. Now, however, it is reportedly in line for yet another substantial re-brand.

It is touted as a cross-platform UI for Xiaomi products that include its smart home portfolio as well as its wearables, although its version for smartphones like the upcoming "16" and "16 Pro" is thought (serendipitously enough) to be based on Android 16.

Accordingly, the new flagships might become the world's first HyperOS 26 devices (and the first with the new Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 processor from Qualcomm) by October 2025.
