Apple is reportedly preparing a large-scale redesign of its software ecosystem, spanning iOS 19, iPadOS 19, macOS 16, watchOS 12, and tvOS 18. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the project is internally codenamed “Solarium” and aims to bring a consistent, modern visual identity across all major Apple platforms.
The redesign is said to be heavily influenced by visionOS, the operating system behind Apple’s Vision Pro headset. The new design includes semi-transparent UI elements, cleaner fonts, updated icons, and subtle effects that move as you interact with the device. These changes follow the same style used in the Vision Pro, bringing parts of that interface to iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
Importantly, this update is not expected to drastically change core app layouts or functionality, making it accessible for long-time users while modernizing the interface. The overhaul reflects Apple’s move to bring visionOS design elements across its platforms and may pave the way for closer alignment between future software and hardware.
Apple is expected to introduce these changes during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), scheduled for June 10–14, 2025. In addition to the visual redesign, Apple is also preparing a suite of AI-powered features under the “Apple Intelligence” banner. These features are likely to include a more responsive Siri, improved writing assistance, summarization tools, enhanced Spotlight search, and more.
While Apple has not confirmed official release dates, the new operating systems are expected to enter public beta by July and roll out globally in September or October 2025. Devices already running iOS 18, macOS 15, watchOS 10, and tvOS 17 are likely to receive the update, although some older models may be excluded depending on hardware compatibility.
Apple has redesigned its platforms before, but not like this. Google is also reportedly revamping Android with version 16, bringing in its new Material 3 Expressive design system. The update leans into fluid visuals, more personalization tools, and tighter hooks into its Gemini AI. Taken together with Apple’s plans, it’s clear both companies are moving toward more responsive and intelligent operating systems.
