Xiaomi becomes the first non Google Android phone maker to debut Android 17 on its phones, but key features remain exclusive to Google Pixel phones.

Xiaomi is beginning to roll out Android 17 to its line of phones, and it's starting with the Xiaomi 17 series. According to reports, the Xiaomi 17 and 17 Ultra are among the first devices to have gotten Android 17. Marquee features like screen reactions remain exclusive to Google's Pixel phones for now.

The update comes complete with HyperOS 3.3, a small security update, for eligible devices. According to the report, not the Xiaomi 15T is also getting the Android 17 update, albeit for a select few users on Xiaomi's pilot program.

Though Android 17 is the next major Android version update, a lot of the bigger features Google announced are coming later in the year. Google Pixel users can expect screen reactions, bubble multi-tasking, and foldable gaming mode for better mobile gameplay. For the Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Ultra, it's just a behind the scene tweak that doesn't have these user-facing features, but there's a reason for that.

A bigger update is reportedly scheduled for August

If Android 17 seems a little lackluster, that's because Xiaomi is preparing its own next big update with HyperOS 4. Though the company has yet to make an announcement, a report from well renowned leaker Digital Chat Station places it as headed for an August 2026 release, within a month of its Android 17 release.

Xiaomi is expected to debut a new Liquid Glass style redesign for its HyperOS software, much like Honor has done with MagicOS 11. Though Google's Material 3 Expressive is how the company thinks Android phones should look, Android phone makers like Xiaomi, Honor, and Oppo have drifted towards a look that's closer to what Apple places on iPhones these days.

Ai-features are also expected to see an improvement here, as is the norm. While something like Google's vibe coded widgets might stay Pixel-exclusive, improvements to audio recording, phone calls, and photography powered by AI are not too far out there.

We'll need to wait a bit longer to see what Xiaomi has planned next, but at least those users who're interested in Android 17 for bragging rights will probably get it sooner rather than later.
