Xiaomi 17T Review
As a result of the DRAM crisis, Xiaomi appears to have identified a cost‑saving opportunity that isn’t immediately obvious from the spec sheet. In our review of the Xiaomi phone, we found that the speaker’s sound quality is noticeably inferior to that of the Xiaomi 15T or Xiaomi 17. This aligns with a trend we’ve observed across our reviews.

In our reviews of Oppo’s new tablets (Pad 5 and Pad 5 Pro), we already speculated that the ongoing DRAM shortage and the resulting high prices would trigger cost-cutting measures affecting the built-in speakers. Our measurement data from the Xiaomi 17T review also lead to a similar conclusion for this mid-range smartphone.

Instead of simply raising the prices of its T-series models (MSRP now starts at around $700, available at Amazon.com), Xiaomi is also cutting costs on the speaker system. In our pink-noise measurement, the Xiaomi 17T performs worse than its predecessor and even worse than the more compact Xiaomi 17

The Xiaomi 17T can’t compete with the best mid-range phones when it comes to speakers

Our test results for the Xiaomi 17T clearly show that the speakers in the new mid-range Xiaomi model deliver less depth and bass than last year’s model. Last year’s T-series model also offers a more balanced high-frequency response. Less obvious, but still noticeable, is the decline in speaker quality in the Pro model.

In response to the shortage of DRAM components, Xiaomi is cutting costs in an area that doesn’t stand out negatively on the spec sheet. For those who expect high audio quality from a smartphone’s built-in speakers, we recommend our review of the Poco F8 Ultra. The Poco phone falls within a price range similar to that of the Xiaomi 17T but features outstanding Bose sound.
