Xiaomi releases new affordable 5G smartphone internationally following global launch
Earlier this month, Xiaomi confirmed that the Redmi 17 5G would eventually receive a global release. At the same time, the company did not elaborate as to when, we discovered a German eBay seller offering the handset for €300 (~$345) with 4 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage.
Now, the Redmi 17 5G has officially gone on sale across Europe and Southeast Asia. Specifically, we have found listings in Italy, Malaysia and Thailand. To recap, the Redmi 17 5G surpasses the Redmi 15 5G (curr. $169 on Amazon) in a few areas. Arguably, the primary of these is a new silicon-carbon battery, which jumps by over 7% from 7,000 mAh to 7,500 mAh.
This battery upgrade is joined by faster wired and reverse wired charging (45 W/22.5 W) and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chipset. However, the Redmi 17 5G includes a few downgrades, including a slower, lower resolution and dimmer IPS display that resolves at 120 Hz, 720p and 825 nits. By contrast, the Redmi 15 5G contains a 144 Hz, 1080p and 850-nit display.
Currently, Xiaomi charges €269.90 (~$311) for the Redmi 17 5G in Italy with 4 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage and a choice between Black, Deep Blue and Vivid Orange colours. Meanwhile, SKUs with twice as much storage cost €299.90 (~$345). In comparison, the same handset starts at MYR 769 and THB 7,999 (~$241) before rising to MYR 869 and THB 8,999 (~$272) with 4 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage.
