Tern has refreshed its popular cargo e-bike, the HSD, bridging significant upgrades to one of its premium electric bikes. The new generation HSD cargo e-bike features Bosch’s latest Performance Line Sport motor, an entirely new frame with cargo-specific geometry, and a Gates belt drive.

Taiwan’s Tern has launched its latest generation HSD electric cargo bike in North America and Europe. The company’s new premium cargo bike brings notable upgrades over the last-generation model, from Bosch’s latest fifth-generation smart system motor and Gates belt drive to a longer wheelbase and a newly designed frame.

First let's talk about powered things. The second-generation HSD cargo e-bike EU model features Bosch’s latest Performance Line fifth-generation Smart System motor, while the US model ships with Bosch's Performance Line Sport motor that delivers 90 Nm of torque and Class 3 speed of up to 28 mph (45 km/h) on pedal assist.

Furthermore, Tern has completely overhauled the frame design of the latest generation cargo e-bike, featuring a step-through 6061 alloy frame with cargo-specific geometry. Plus, it now has a longer wheelbase and a lower center of gravity than before, which is further said to provide enhanced stability and handling. At just 68.5 inches (174 cm), the e-bike is relatively compact and short compared to other cargo e-bikes in the market.

Despite HSD’s compact and shorter form factor, the e-bike can haul a maximum of 190 kg (419 lb) weight. Plus, the rear rack can now alone handle a payload of 80 kg (176 lb). A 545 Wh battery powers the entire cargo e-bike, which is said to offer up to 107 km (66 miles) of range on a single charge. Moreover, you can either choose from a 3X3 NINE internal gear hub paired with a Gates carbon belt drive or TRP’s wireless electronic drivetrain with fully automatic shifting.

A color display on the handlebar shows information about the e-bike’s active mode, battery level, and more. Other features include vertical parking, hydraulic disc brakes, GPS tracking, an e-bike lock, and an e-bike alarm system, which provides extra layers of protection when locking down HSD. The new Tern HSD offers a total of four models, starting at $4,999.
