A new e-bike carrying the Volkswagen name is being marketed as the world’s first “smart e-bike” and introduces several promising features aimed at enhancing road safety.

The manufacturer N Plus promotes the Volkswagen Sport eBike as the world’s first “smart” e-bike. That claim is questionable, as other models already offer similar connected features, but the bike still integrates a wide range of smart functions. The Volkswagen Sport eBike offers features such as blind-spot monitoring and an rearview camera, which displays its feed on the screen and is automatically activated by a rear-facing radar. Braking and turning maneuvers are signaled to other road users via lights on the Smart Helmet. Navigation instructions and blind-spot warnings can also be shown directly in the rider’s field of view using smart glasses, although these connect to a smartphone rather than the e-bike itself.

Weighing around 27.5 kg, the bike features a classic frame design and a Yamaha PW-X3 mid-drive motor with up to 85 Nm of torque. It is powered by a removable 490 Wh battery, with an optional 814 Wh rack-mounted unit that may negatively affect weight distribution. The setup includes a 9-speed Shimano Cues derailleur, an aluminum frame, illuminated Volkswagen logos at the front and rear, a 100-lux headlight, and Tektro hydraulic disc brakes.

The Volkswagen Sport eBike is available to order for $3,999, with deliveries planned for Q4. Pre-order customers receive the rearview camera at no extra cost. The Smart Glasses and Smart Helmet are priced at $499 each, while the range extender costs $848.

Optionally, there are glasses for AR navigation prompts.
