Many e-bikes are receiving new features via a Bosch software update for various mid-drive systems. A key addition is adjustable drivetrain preloading, which reduces response delays and improves control, especially in demanding situations.

Bosch is rolling out a new software update for several mid-drive motors—or more precisely, complete drive systems. In addition to the motors themselves, Bosch supplies controllers, batteries, and displays, which bicycle manufacturers typically integrate as a unified system. With version 1.36 of the eBike Flow app, Bosch introduces new features for multiple drive units, including the Performance Line CX-R (BDU386Y), Performance Line SX (BDU314Y), and Cargo Line (BDU374Y). For now, the announcement applies primarily to the German and broader European market.

One key addition is a configurable Extended Boost setting within the app. Riders can now fine-tune the level of overrun assistance across several stages. This allows the bike to continue moving forward for up to around two meters after the last pedal stroke—for example, when clearing a root on a trail or mounting a curb in urban environments. In practice, however, this feature may require some familiarization, as the continued assistance can catch riders off guard.

Bosch has also introduced a drivetrain preloading function for the Performance Line CX-R (BDU386Y) and Performance Line CX (BDU384Y) in Race, eMTB, and eMTB+ modes. This feature reduces pedal dead travel, shortening response time and improving power modulation. It is particularly beneficial when navigating technical terrain.
