Nikon DL premium compact camera with 1-inch sensor and zoom said to make a comeback

The Nikon DL was discontinued in February 2017, one year after the camera series was announced and before shipments had begun. Nikon encountered problems developing the electronics, and the market for compact cameras had shrunk during that period, which is why the company ultimately decided against launching the Nikon DL.
Now, the Nikon DL could be making a comeback, because according to the latest information from NikonRumors, Nikon plans to release one or two cameras from the series. According to NikonRumors, the company is planning either a new model with a lens featuring a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 24 – 70 mm, or the two originally planned variants: one with an 18 – 50 mm f/1.8–2.8 lens, and one with a 24 – 85 mm f/1.8–2.8 lens. The 24–500 mm super-zoom variant announced in 2016 is reportedly no longer in the works.
The zoom lens will reportedly be paired with a modern 24-megapixel sensor in the 1-inch format. This would position the Nikon DL to compete with cameras such as the Powershot G7 X Mark III ($1,550 on Amazon). The Nikon DL is set to be positioned as a premium compact camera, featuring a particularly high-quality body and user-configurable filters. An electronic viewfinder is said to be offered as an optional accessory for the hot shoe. It is not yet known when or at what price the Nikon DL will be released. The Nikon DL is said to be developed alongside a new full-frame compact camera, not instead of it.
