Tecno has finally released its long-awaited attempt at cracking the gaming handheld market. The Tecno Pocket Go may look like a controller, but it contains an AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS APU, LPDDR5-6400 RAM and a 50 Wh battery that can be paired with an external monitor or Tecno's Pocket Vision VR glasses.

The gaming handheld market has moved on a lot this year, whether that be with the ASUS ROG Ally X at the high end or the countless Anbernic releases like the RG35XX SP (curr. $76.99 on Amazon) at the lower end of the market. Now, Tecno has started selling the Pocket Go through Kickstarter, which eschews the traditional gaming handheld form factor altogether.

To recap, Tecno unveiled the Pocket Go in February during MWC 2024, where it confirmed various key specifications and what the device looked like. Following that, it brought the same device to IFA 2024 in September, albeit without outlining pricing or availability. For reference, the Pocket Go controller runs Windows 11 with the following hardware:

  • AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS APU (10-30 W TDP)
  • Radeon 780M iGPU
  • LPDDR5-6400 RAM
  • M.2 2230 (NVMe PCIe Gen4)
  • 50 Wh battery (65 W charging)

Moreover, the Pocket Go controller has a pair of USB Type-C ports and a UHS-II MicroSD card reader, as well as Hall effect analog sticks and triggers. On top of that, the controller has the usual assortment of gamepad buttons, including ABXY buttons with an Xbox layout, all within a 550 g and 181.7 x 129.7 x 67.4 mm housing.

By contrast, the accompanying Pocket Vision glasses output at 1080p and 60 Hz across 0.71-inch Micro OLED displays. Furthermore, the VR glasses feature a pair of speakers, a headphone jack and a myopic adjustment wheel. Unfortunately, they also come with a fixed USB Type-C port, unlike their contemporaries.

The Pocket Go and its accompanying VR glasses are available to back on Kickstarter starting at approximately $869. While this SKU comes with 512 GB of storage and 16 GB of RAM, a separate 32 GB of RAM and 1 TB SKU is also available for $1,049. Alternatively, Tecno is offering the Pocket Vision glasses separately for $349. Please note that the company intends to start shipping both products in December 2024 but will begin selling them outside Kickstarter for higher prices in November.
