Word on the grapevine now strongly indicates that Samsung's upcoming foldable phones will not be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 on the Galaxy S22 series. Instead, the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4 will both opt for Qualcomm's imminent Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus.

The Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4 will make their grand debuts in a few months, and most information about design and hardware changes for both devices have leaked over the past few weeks. It appears, too, that the two phones will pack Qualcomm's latest and greatest—the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus.

According to Ice Universe, the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4 will both be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus. The chipset, coded as "SM8475" is yet to launch, but is expected to be unveiled later this month, and find its way into smartphones shortly after. It's an interesting choice by Samsung, as the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3 both eschewed the Snapdragon 888 Plus in favor of the regular Snapdragon 888. That will not be the case this year.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus will make the switch from Samsung's 4 nm manufacturing process to TSMC's, which promises better efficiency and sustained performance. The upcoming chipset is expected to offer around 10% better performance than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 on the Galaxy S22 series, while also delivering better battery life and thermals.
