Rumors suggest Nintendo aims for colossal launch of 7 million Switch 2 units
When a new console hits the market, there’s no guarantee that everyone who wants one will be able to get it. This was evident during the PlayStation 5 launch in November 2020. However, in January, Bloomberg journalist Takashi Mochizuki suggested, based on display shipment data, that this scenario might not repeat with the Switch successor. According to him, Nintendo plans to produce 10 million units in its first fiscal year.
Now there are new rumors about the launch availability of the Switch 2, which is expected to launch in March 2025. This information comes from Famiboards user Ninspider, who shared a sketch of the console on the forum in October, later verified by credible insiders. The user has now posted an encrypted text, which was decrypted using Base64:
"The initial stock quantity has been finalized, and the factory will plan production accordingly. I can't disclose the exact number, but for the U.S. market alone, it's roughly 2.5 times the volume from March 2017."
If Nintendo is planning such a volume worldwide, nobody needs to worry that they will be left empty-handed at the launch of the Switch successor. The Nintendo Switch shipped 2.74 million units in its first month, and 2.5 times that would amount to approximately 7 million units within the same timeframe. This is indeed a huge console launch. Unfair scalping, as we recently saw with the launch of the 30th Anniversary Edition of the PS5 Pro, would at least not be a concern with such unit numbers.
