Recent rumors suggest that the Google Pixel Tablet 2 is on the horizon, but there may not be a successor after that. A new report from Android Headlines hints that the company has given up on the lineup. Citing "multiple industry sources close to the project," this report claims that the company has canceled its efforts for Pixel Tablet 3.
Google apparently made this decision last week, and it has seemingly reassigned the people working with the Pixel Tablet 3 to other projects. Of course, this wouldn't be the first time the company has made attempts to abandon its Android tablet lineup.
Back in 2019, the company announced its exit from the tablet market by halting the production of two devices, only to re-enter the business with the Pixel Tablet in 2023. The second-gen device is still rumored to be on track for next year, and it's possible that Google is thinking about a new strategy for its large-sized devices.
For example, the company may be thinking of focusing more on the foldable lineup. The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold has been received well, and in the unfolded state, it's more of a mini tablet than a phone. Its Pixel Tablet lineup, on the other hand, lacks integration of many tablet-specific features that competitors like Apple offer (base M2 iPad Air curr. $499 on Amazon). All this hints that the company was never all-in with the series.
But then again, if Google indeed announces its exit from the market for the second time, there's no guarantee that it won't re-enter business once again. This will likely depend on how good the Pixel Tablet 2 ends up and how well it sells.
