Ranking: Best 17-inch office laptops reviewed by Notebookcheck
Office laptops with a large 17-inch screen are particularly suitable for users who prefer a laptop to a desktop PC for reasons of space and whose daily activities, such as web surfing, office applications and watching videos, require only moderate computing power. The internal 17-inch display is intended to replace an external monitor and at the same time enable mobile use of the laptop, for example within the home or garden. The price is also an important criterion in this category. Around 1,000 euros is often the upper pain threshold.
The following top list contains only notebooks that we have tested in detail. The individual tests are linked and provide detailed information on all devices.

Note: The switch to a new rating system took place in June 2024. In the new v8 rating, the criteria were adapted to current hardware developments, new points were added and individual measurement methods were changed. As a result, the v8 ratings are slightly lower than under v7. The new v8 rating is not directly comparable with previous versions. For this reason, we are listing two tables with the best devices according to v7 and v8 rating here for the time being. Further information on the new v8 rating can be found here.

Editorial comment
Not only are the boundaries between multimedia and office use blurred in this segment, but you can also find budget gaming laptops with up to an GeForce RTX 3060 or RTX 4050 alongside laptops with integrated or entry-level graphics. This is because affordable gaming laptops with a large screen are often very well suited for any work purpose. They often have good input devices, a sturdy chassis and powerful hardware, while most also offer different performance profiles, which ensures quiet operation.
Overall, the 17-inch class is dying out more and more, especially among non-gamers, which is why this list only includes a few pure office notebooks, which are also getting older and older.
Laptops with an integrated or entry-level GPU are equally suitable for media playback, simple image and video editing and, of course, for office applications such as Word and Excel, as well as for surfing the web. If PC gaming is part of your range of applications, you should look for laptops with Geforce RTX 3050 (Ti), RTX 3060, Radeon RX 6600M, RTX 4050 and upwards. You can find suitable models in our Top list of current budget gaming laptops.
1st place - Schenker XMG Apex 17 (Late 2023)
1st place in our top list is currently Schenker's XMG Apex 17 (Late 2023). Actually a gaming laptop, it impresses with an optional GeForce RTX 4050 or RTX 4060. You also have a choice of display, either with QHD or FHD resolution. Accordingly, the refresh rate is 240 Hz or 144 Hz. Both panels cover 100% of the sRGB color space.
The system performance is immense, especially thanks to the built-in eight-core AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS. Gamers can also work quietly and the RAM can be upgraded in the same way as the SSD memory (two slots each).
The 2.5 kg heavy and 25 mm thick gaming machine impresses above all with its raw performance and, together with the built-in RTX graphics, is suitable as a mobile workstation.
Compromises have to be made with the battery life of 5 hours, as well as the mediocre keyboard, the lower chassis rigidity and the lack of Thunderbolt 4 and Power Delivery.
The price was usually around 1,070 euros, but the Apex 17 is sold out in the short term.

2nd place - LG Gram 17 (2024)
Only 1.35 kg is the weight of the LG Gram 17 (2024) and takes second place in our top list. The 17-incher has a matt 16:10 display with QHD resolution, 97% DCI-P3 and a brightness of 387 cd/m². Once you have the LG Gram with its dimensions of 380 x 262 millimeters in your hands, the low weight feels surreal. However, no plastic is used, but a light metal construction (magnesium).
The built-in Meteor Lake processor can deliver decent multi-core performance despite limited cooling options. Coupled with a long battery life of over 15 hours, the LG Gram 17 is an ideal mobile companion.
The keyboard continues to provide an excellent picture and the noise emissions have improved in comparison to the direct predecessor direct predecessor have been reduced. On the other hand, there are shortcomings such as poor maintenance options and the suboptimal chassis rigidity due to the design.
For the variant with Intel Core Ultra 7 155H, 16 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD, you currently only pay 849 euros in the Black Friday deal from Cyberport and Computeruniverse.
3rd place - Tulpar T7 V20.6
With a GeForce RTX 4060 and an Intel Core i7-13700H you get brute performance within the office class with the Tulpar T7 V20.6. However, the 30 mm thick behemoth has very good office features overall, as it remains absolutely quiet and cool under low loads, offers a very comfortable keyboard with a long stroke and comes with a 350 cd/m² bright FullHD IPS display, including a high contrast ratio, full sRGB coverage, short pixel response times and 144Hz refresh rate.
There is also HDMI 2.1 (4K @60Hz) and an SD card reader, which is, however, very slow and lacks Thunderbolt. The built-in 1 TB SSD and the 16 GB RAM are easily expandable, and the manufacturer also offers a lifetime, annual, free maintenance of the 17-inch notebook.
The inexpensive Tulpar T7 V20.6 is an inconspicuous gaming notebook that can easily pass as an office machine and basically offers everything you need. However, the battery life and the touchpad leave a lot to be desired.
The T7 V20.6 from Tulpar is currently available in the Amazon Black Friday offer for 919 euros.
4th place - Asus TUF Gaming A17 FA707XI
Our test model of the Asus TUF Gaming A17 has a more powerful Ryzen 9 7940HS and an RTX 4070while a much cheaper configuration with a Ryzen 7 7735HS and an RTX 4050 should be absolutely sufficient for most people. The case with reinforcing metal plate in the lid is stable and USB4 is also on board. You also get a 144 Hz fast refresh rate and a long battery life of 9 hours.
The maintenance options of the Asus TUF Gaming A17 are just as good as the performance, with the main drawbacks being the low display brightness and the workmanship in detail.
The touchpad is quite large and offers good feedback. However, the color space coverage and color accuracy are on a low level and the response times of the matte FullHD display are also slow. The Realtek WLAN chip is also relatively slow. There is also no card reader. The case temperatures remain low, but the fans turn up quite a bit under full load.
If you can make do with these disadvantages, you can currently buy the Asus TUF Gaming A17 with an AMD Ryzen 5 and RTX 4060 graphics for 906 euros at Galaxus.
5th place - Acer Nitro 5 AN517-55 (2023)
Not a typical office workhorse, but still meets the usage criteria of our 17-inch office top list. Not only is the look a little unusual for the office desk, but the internal values are also ideal for gaming during lunch breaks, as an Nvidia Geforce RTX 4050 with DLSS3 support.
While in our test report the configuration with the Intel Core i5-12500H in our test report, we unfortunately also found negative points, as the 3 kg 17-inch laptop is incredibly loud under load with up to 67.5 dB(A) and does not remain silent even in pure office mode.
Although the Acer Nitro 5's matte Full HD IPS display offers 144 Hz, it lacks brightness (257 cd/m²) and color fidelity. The RGB-illuminated keyboard is pleasant and the battery life of 9.5 hours is pretty good.
All in all, the Nitro 5 delivers a good performance as an office laptop with gaming ambitions. Equipped with an Intel Core i5-12450H, 16 GB RAM, 512 SSD and an RTX 4050, the Acer laptop currently costs 1,069 euros
6th place - HP Envy 17 (2024)
An office-multimedia hybrid in the 17-inch class is the HP Envy 17which is related to the HP 17 and HP 470. The casing of the 17-inch model is made of sturdy aluminum and houses a full-size SD card reader, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, three USB-A ports and HDMI, but no Ethernet port.
The HP Envy 17 is a 17-inch office notebook with multimedia ambitions - it offers a very good keyboard, very good speakers, a long battery life and a pleasant touch display, which is, however, very reflective.
The basic equipment includes the Full HD IPS panel with 100% sRGB and a measured brightness of 290 cd/m². The built-in Core Ultra 7 155U offers very good office performance, which, depending on the cooling mode selected, is roughly equivalent to the Performance of the predecessor corresponds. Our test model has a dedicated GeForce RTX 3050which results in higher noise emissions of up to 48 dB(A) and case temperatures of over 50 °C during gaming. The battery has grown from 56 Wh to a full 86 Wh, which results in a significantly longer runtime than its predecessor, namely over 12 hours. In addition, the RAM is no longer soldered.
The HP Envy 17 is currently available without dGPU and with a Core Ultra 5 125H, Intel Arc 8 iGPU, 16 GB RAM and FHD touchscreen for 898 euros.
7th place - Medion S20
The Medion S20 finally brings a breath of fresh air to our top list of 17-inch office notebooks. The 60 Hz refresh rate and the 16:9 screen diagonal of the matte Full HD IPS display show that this is a pure office notebook in the lower mid-range.
After all, the casing is made of aluminum and magnesium. Thunderbolt 4 and an SD card reader are also missing. There are two slots each for expanding the RAM and mass storage and fast charging is supported.
Medion's 2.1 kg lightweight and 20 mm thin 17-incher offers decent performance thanks to Intel Core Ultra 7 and a 340 cd/m² bright display with 95% sRGB - but the emissions are not always within limits.
The Medion S20 with Core Ultra 5, 1 TB SSD and 16 GB RAM is currently priced at 899 euros in the Aldi online shop.
8th place - Acer Aspire 17 (2024)
The Acer Aspire 17 (2024) only made it into our top list due to the lack of modern competition in the 17-inch office class. The FHD IPS display is inferior thanks to 250 cd/m² and only 65% sRGB, especially considering the price point of 1,000 euros.
The keyboard is not the best, the fan control is lousy, the speakers are mediocre and the built-in RTX 2050 is not really faster than 's current integrated graphics solutions.
The Acer Aspire 17 (2024) is currently not a good choice - all the important aspects for an office laptop are not fulfilled.
All in all, there are better alternatives for the price and even for a third of the price https://geizhals.de/lenovo-ideapad-3-17alc6-82kv00lfge-a3315031.html . The only positive features are the expandable RAM, Thunderbolt 4 and the cool case temperatures, while the performance is quite good.
Retailers are currently still asking
a whole 999 euros for the Acer Aspire 17 (2024).
