Medion Erazer Beast X30 review: Slim, powerful QHD gaming notebook
The Medion Erazer Beast X30 belongs to the category of slim gaming notebooks in the 17.3-inch format. Despite its compact size, the notebook contains powerful hardware in the form of a Core i9 12900HK processor and a GeForce RTX 3080 Ti laptop GPU. The CPU is based on a barebone (GM7AG8P) from Tongfang. Competitors include devices such as the MSI Stealth GS77 12UHS, the Uniwill Technology GM7AG8P and the Razer Blade 17 (2022).

Case - Medion uses a metal chassis for the Erazer
Using a slim, matte black metal case reminiscent of previous models, Medion has opted for an unobtrusive design with mostly matte surfaces throughout. Only the surface of the bottom shell has a rough feel. A freely configurable LED band (RGB) on the bottom front edge of the case facing the user provides some color. The battery is installed in the device (screwed, not glued). The interior is accessible upon removing the bottom shell.
The well-manufactured case has even gaps and there are no protrusions and/or sharp edges. Another positive aspect is that the base unit cannot be twisted. The screen, however, twists a little, but this is completely within limits. The hinges hold the lid firmly in position but also teeter a little. The maximum opening angle is around 130 degrees. One-hand opening of the lid is possible.
Hardware - The X30 offers Thunderbolt 4
The X30 comes with three USB-A slots (2x USB 3.2 Gen 1, 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2) and one USB-C port (Thunderbolt 4). The latter supports DisplayPort via USB-C which, together with the HDMI 2.1 slot, provides two video outputs. There are also two audio jacks (headphone output, microphone input), a Gigabit Ethernet port and an opening for a cable lock.
SD Card Reader
The microSD memory card reader (reference card: microSD AV Pro 128 GB V60) belongs to the medium-fast category with maximum transfer rates of 66 MB/s (transfer of 250 jpg image files at around 5 MB each) and 83 MB/s (copying of large data blocks).

Communication
The WLAN transfer rates determined under optimal conditions (no other WLAN devices in the immediate vicinity, short distance between notebook and server PC) are excellent and reflect the capabilities of the inbuilt WiFi chip (Intel AX201; 802.11 ax). Wired network connections are handled by a Gigabit Ethernet chip (RTL8125) from Realtek.

Webcam
Medion offers something new in regard to the webcam: the X30 comes with a 2.1 MP camera (predecessor: 0.9 MP), which produces images at a maximum resolution of 1920x1080. However, there is a problem with color accuracy: the colors deviate significantly from the target values. The camera also does not have a mechanical shutter.
Acccessories
The notebook comes with the usual documents: a quick start guide and warranty information.
Maintenance
After removing all the screws on the laptop's underside, the bottom shell can be removed quite easily. A flat spatula may be needed to remove the bottom shell. You then have access to the main memory banks (both occupied), the SSD (PCIe 4), the second M.2-2280 slot (PCIe 4), the WLAN module, the fans, the BIOS battery and the laptop battery.
Warranty
The Erazer comes with a two-year warranty from Medion. An extension of the warranty by one to two years is also possible but the costs could not be found on the Medion website.
Input devices - The keyboard offers RGB lighting
Keyboard
The concave keys of the illuminated chiclet keyboard have a short travel distance and a clear pressure point. Key resistance is acceptable. A positive point: The keyboard does not yield while typing. The four-stage key illumination (RGB) is controlled via two function keys. Overall, Medion delivers a keyboard that is suitable for everyday use.
Touchpad
The smooth surface of the multi-touch clickpad (approx. 13.2 x 7.5cm) makes finger gliding easy. It offers short travel and a clear pressure point. In the upper left corner of the pad is an LED that provides information about the pad status (on/off). In this area, the pad does not react to input.
Display - Medion notebook with responsive IPS panel
The brightness (352.1 cd/m²) and the contrast ratio (1,178:1) of the matte 17.3-inch screen (2560x1440) are on target. Another positive point is that the 240 Hz panel installed in the test unit has short response times and does not show PWM flickering (the current models on sale so far, however, only have 165 Hz panels).

Performance - Enough for the next few years
With the Erazer Beast X30, Medion has a 17.3-inch gaming notebook in its range that plays every current game smoothly.
Test Conditions
The X30 has three manufacturer-specific performance profiles (Office Mode, Game Mode, Turbo Mode) and the user can alternate between these via a separate button (next to the power button). The battery tests were conducted under Office Mode and the benchmarks under the standard Game Mode profile. Some benchmarks were also run under the other profiles. All results can be found in the comparison diagrams.
The pre-installed Control Center allows the profiles to be adjusted. For example, the power limits of the CPU, the TGP of the GPU and/or the upper temperature limits can be changed. Up to five sub-profiles can also be created per profile in order to map specific application or usage scenarios.
Turbo Mode | Game Mode | Office Mode | |
---|---|---|---|
Power Limit 1 | 120 Watt | 120 Watt | 35 Watt |
Power Limit 2 | 120 Watt | 120 Watt | 35 Watt |
Processor
The inbuilt Core i9-12900HK processor (Alder Lake) consists of six performance cores (hyperthreading, 2.5 to 5 GHz) and eight efficiency cores (no hyperthreading, 1.8 to 3.8 GHz), making for a total of 20 logical CPU cores. Thanks to a free multiplier, nothing stands in the way of overclocking the CPU.
Both the multi-thread test (P-cores: 4.1 to 4.2 GHz, E-cores: 3.1 to 3.2 GHz) and the single-thread test (P-cores: 1.4 up to 4.3 GHz, E cores: 1.5 to 3.7 GHz) of the Cinbench R15 benchmark were run at high clock speeds.
The CPU delivers only below-average single-thread performance by 12900HK standards, as it does not run at maximum clock speed (P: 4.3 to 5 GHz; E: 3.8 GHz). Perhaps Medion can and should improve this with a BIOS update. The Uniwill notebook, based on the same barebone as the X30, gets 10 to 15 percent more single-thread performance out of the Core i9 12900H CPU (corresponding to the 12900HK only without a free multiplier) with significantly lower power limits.
We checked whether the CPU Turbo is used continuously in mains operation by running the multi-thread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmark in a loop. High clock speeds can be maintained continuously. Turbo Mode does not bring about any improvements. Increasing the power limits (1 and 2) to 140 watts provides a minimal increase in CPU power.

Storage Devices
The inbuilt 1 TB SSD (PCIe 4, M.2-2280) from Samsung is one of the top models among SSDs and delivers correspondingly excellent transfer rates. The notebook offers space for a second SSD (PCIe 4, M.2-2280).
The SSD has two accessible partitions: an operating system partition (921 GB) and a recovery partition (29.9 GB). The latter contains the operating system image as well as the drivers and the included applications. The "Cyberlink PowerRecover" application is used to restore the laptop to its factory settings.
