The latest incarnation of the high-end Medion Erazer Beast series has received a major overhaul: it features a new chassis, a different screen aspect ratio (16:10 as opposed to 16:9) and a mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX switches. Medion also offers an optional external water cooling unit that will set you back around €250 (US$270). Its purpose: improving performance while cutting down heat and noise.
Thanks to it having the latest top-of-the-line CPU and GPU (Core i9-13900HX, GeForce RTX 4090), the system is well-equipped to handle demanding tasks such as video editing, rendering and gaming. Two 1 TB PCIe 4.0 SSDs provide the necessary storage and keep loading times brief. The Erazer Beast X40 supports Advanced Optimus and can run in Optimus or dGPU mode.
The X40 is conceived with QHD+ gaming at max settings in mind. That said, it is possible to use a higher resolution by connecting an appropriate monitor to the device via one of two video outputs available (1x HDMI and 1x DP). The laptop features a 17-inch matt IPS display with a 16:10 aspect ratio (2,560 x 1,600) that is generally quite pleasing to the eye.
The mechanical keyboard with per-key RGB lighting largely leaves a very good impression and is certainly a crucial selling point for many potential buyers. There is a Thunderbolt 4 that lets you add expansion options such as a dock or an external GPU. To round off the package, the X40 also has pretty good battery life.
The X40 model in our review costs around €4,500 (US$4,856). Medion also sells a slightly lower-spec configuration (RTX 4080, 1 TB SSD; otherwise identical) at roughly €3,500 (US$3,777)
