Medion Erazer Beast X30: Lots of gaming power at a high price
With the Erazer Beast X30, Medion has a gaming notebook in its range that is based on a barebone from Tongfang (GM7AG8P). The 17.3-incher comes in a matte black metal case that has proven to be well made and very stable: The base unit cannot be twisted. Weighing just under 2.2 kg, the laptop falls into the category of light, compact gaming notebooks.
The combination of a Core-i9-12900HK CPU, a GeForce RTX-3080 Ti laptop GPU and DDR5-4800 RAM (dual-channel mode) offers enough power for common application areas such as image & video editing, rendering and of course, gaming. An lighting fast PCIe-4 SSD provides the necessary storage space and ensures short loading times. There is also space for a second PCIe-4-SSD.
The inbuilt hardware plays all current games smoothly. Full screen resolution (2560x1440) and maximum settings can usually be selected. The matte QHD screen offers stable viewing angles, short response times, great color reproduction and good color space coverage. The brightness and contrast ratio are on point.
The notebook comes with a Thunderbolt 4 port that supports the DisplayPort-per-USB-C function, but not Power Delivery. The 91 Wh battery thus cannot be charged via USB-C power supply, which in turn means that a bulky 330-watt power supply has to be carried around. One battery charge is sufficient for a Wi-Fi runtime of about 5.5 hours - not an exhilarating value, but a decent one.
