“Massive” Pixel Buds update improves dynamic ANC, translations and more

With software version release_6.144, Google is currently rolling out what it calls a “massive” update for the Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a – but apparently not for the original Buds Pro, as explained further below. The update includes several features that Google had already partially announced alongside the Pixel 11 series. According to Google, the update is intended to make everyday situations such as traveling, phone calls or listening to music before falling asleep more convenient. The update is being rolled out gradually. Whether release_6.144 is already available can be checked in the Pixel Buds app under “More settings” → “Firmware update.”
What's included in the new Pixel Buds update
One of the biggest new features is reserved for the Pixel Buds Pro 2 (currently $245 on Amazon). Dynamic Active Noise Cancellation is designed to automatically adjust active noise cancellation based on how securely the earbuds are sitting in the ears. If an earbud shifts slightly while running, for example, the sound and ANC are adjusted accordingly. All other new features are available for both the Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a.
Another update concerns the Live Translate feature. Translations can now be started directly by tapping an earbud, allowing the smartphone to remain in the user's pocket. The actual translation continues to be handled by the Google Translate app. The mode can be used both for conversations and for listening in foreign-language environments. Control of the Pixel Buds via Gemini is also new or becoming more widely available. Settings such as noise cancellation, the equalizer or touch controls can be changed using voice commands. Google had already introduced the corresponding Gemini integration through an update to the Pixel Buds app in late September and is now rolling it out more broadly.
Tap to Mute is also being added for phone calls: A tap on the earbuds is enough to mute or unmute the microphone. However, this feature requires a paired Pixel smartphone. Another feature is aimed at users who fall asleep while listening to music or podcasts: If a connected Pixel Watch detects that the user has fallen asleep, the Pixel Buds automatically pause playback, disable touch gestures and suppress notifications.
Update apparently not coming to Pixel Buds Pro after all
On Reddit, the update has generally been well received. The new sleep mode in particular appears to be a welcome upgrade for many users. However, several Redditors feel that Google is overselling it somewhat by calling it a “massive” update. Some users are also disappointed because Google apparently initially listed the original Pixel Buds Pro among the devices supported by the update, only to remove them later. The update therefore doesn't appear to be intended for the first-generation Pixel Buds Pro.
