MSI Radeon RX 470 Gaming X 4 GB Review
For the original German review, see here.
According to AMD, the majority of gamers are not willing to spend more than $300 on a new graphics card. And this is exactly where AMD positions its graphics card based on 3D transistors (14 nm FinFET at Global Foundries). After the launch of the Radeon RX 480 based on the Polaris 10 chip, we now have the Radeon RX 470, which is also equipped with a Polaris 10 chip. However, AMD has reduced the performance, so the RX 470 has only 2048 shaders. The clock of the GPU has been reduced as well, and it now runs at 926 MHz according to AMD. The TDP is reduced by 30 watts compared to the Radeon RX 480. At 120 watts, the card would theoretically also be suitable for notebooks.

Polaris
Polaris is AMD's first architecture manufactured in a 14 nm FinFET process. It is the 4th generation GCN (Graphics Core Next) architecture and offers the following improvements according to AMD:
- Enhanced geometry engines
- Improved shader efficiency (up to 15% per CU at RX 480 vs. R9 290)
- LiquidVR API support with "Variable Resolution Rendering"
- Improved memory controller and Delta Color Compression (DCC) with full 2/4/8:1 support
- Doubled Level 2 cache
- Shader Instruction Pre-Fetch and improved buffering
- Improved Asynchronous Compute
- AMD TrueAudio Next (calculated via shader)
- H.265 Main 10 decode and 4K60 HEVC encode
- HDMI 2.0b, DisplayPort 1.3 HBR (5K60 with a single cable) / 1.4 HDR with HDCP 2.2
- HDR display support
These improvements are supposed to increase the performance by up to a factor of 2.8x (RX 470 vs. R9 270X) per watt.
Our test system for the following benchmarks consists of the following components:
Intel Core i7-4790K (not overclocked), 16 GB DDR3, Asus ZU97-Deluxe, Asus PB287Q 4K monitor, Intel SSD 530 (240 GB, system), OCZ Trion 100 SSD (480 GB, benchmarks), Windows 10 64-bit with all updates as of mid-June. As a driver we used the pre-launch driver 16.8.1, which was made available to the press ahead of the launch.
Synthetic Benchmarks
We start our performance evaluation with a look at the synthetic benchmarks from Futuremark and Unigine. Depending on the test, the Radeon RX 470 is between 1 and 10% behind the Radeon RX 480 and is therefore even closer to the larger sibling than the specifications might suggest. This should be a result of the slightly higher clocks of our RX 470 custom model, but the Polaris architecture has also benefited from some driver optimizations since the launch of the RX 480. The difference between the two chips should generally be in the double digit range.
Our comparison shows that the RX 470 can compete with the popular Maxwell GPU GeForce GTX 970 and even clearly beat it in 3DMark 11. Unigine Heaven and Valley on the other hand show an advantage in favor of the Nvidia model; so generally, they are pretty much on par. The current GeForce GTX 1060 is 16% faster than the RX 470, but is also significantly more expensive.

Gaming Benchmarks
The RX 470 falls slightly behind the Nvidia competition in our gaming benchmarks, but the performance is still impressive when you consider the price. Our overclocked MSI model is just behind the older, but much more power-hungry Radeon R9 290X as well as the GeForce GTX 970, and is less than 10% slower than the reference card of the RX 480. This is sufficient to play basically all the games from 2016 in Full HD and highest details – some games such as “Dirt Rally” can even be played in WQHD (2560x1440 pixels) or UHD (3840x2160 pixels). In general, users of high-resolution monitors had better wait for the upcoming high-end series "Vega" if they want a GPU from AMD, at least if you always want to activate the maximum settings.
The marginally faster RX 480 has got a strong internal rival with the RX 470 model, which are available for a little more than 200 Euros (~$222) – especially if you can live with the 4 GB version, which is currently sufficient for most games.
More gaming benchmarks are listed at the end of this article. They are constantly maintained and updated.

Performance under load / Throttling
With modern Boost and Turbo features, it is obviously very important to know how long the graphics card can maintain its performance. Sustained load for several hours is not uncommon when playing games. The situation is very good for MSI's RX 470. Our test with "The Witcher 3" in 1920x1080 and Ultra settings was executed with a steady clock of 1242 MHz and the GPU temperature levelled off at an uncritical 66 °C (~151 °F).
The performance dropped by just 0.2% in the 3DMark Tim Spy stress test (20 runs). The FurMark stress test was also executed at a steady 1242 MHz and a core temperature of 72 °C (~162 °F).
Compute Performance
The Radeon RX 480 is equipped with 36 Compute Units for general calculations. AMD pushes the open CL protocol, but DirectCompute is also supported. The performance is actually decent in LuxMark (OpenCL) as well as ComputeMark (DirectCompute) and on par with the GTX 970 and GTX 1060. The reference RX 480 is 9% faster.

Video Engine
Both the RX 470 and RX 480 use the same video engine, which had no problems with an H.264 4K video (100 Mbps, 3% CPU load) during our tests. H.265 in 4K was no problem either (see RX 480 review). The RX 470 does not have a PlayReady 3.0 (SL3000) certification that the GTX 1080 already does. However, according to AMD this should be possible in the future.
Power Consumption
As the RX 480, the RX 470 shows no major improvement to the previous generation in Idle power consumption. The RX 460, based on the smaller Polaris 11 chip, and the GTX 10 cards are using less power.
Under load the RX 470 is using a bit less power than the old GTX 970 from MSI. Compared to the much faster GTX 1070 (the efficient Founders Edition however), the power consumption is similar.
System Noise
As with the GTX 1070 Gaming Z, the Gaming X version of the RX 470 can convince with a particularly quiet operation. Even at a core temperature of 72 °C (~162 °F) during the FurMark stress test, the fans were spinning at an average of only 1120 RPM and stayed quieter than the CPU cooler (be-quiet) in our test system. Transistor whining was only slightly audible at very high FPS numbers (as in 3DMark Cloud Gate) and was not annoying.
Unfortunately, the two large fans are not deactivated while idling, but they remain very quiet and cool at 876 RPM and 46 °C (~115 °F) respectively.
Heat Development
The back of the RX 470 warmed up significantly during the test. We can measure up to 87 °C (~189 °F) and therefore much more compared to the reference RX 480 (72 °C/~162 °F). On the other hand, the large fans kept the front relatively cool. Obviously, the two heat pipes at the side get very warm at a measured 48 °C (~118 °F).
The internal GPU sensors show up to 66 °C (~151 °F) under heavy load ( The Witcher 3 for example) – not critical at all. The maximum value at 72 °C (~162 °F) is reported during FurMark, but the MSI RX 470 still runs at 1242 MHz (no throttling).
Verdict
The MSI RX 470 Gaming X 4G performed really well during our review and was just about 6% slower than the reference RX 480 in our gaming benchmarks. Thanks to the steady 1242 MHz it is around 4% faster than a reference RX 470 (3620 Time Spy points according to AMD). This means that it is best suited for Full HD gaming at maximum settings. Only XCOM 2 required slight quality reductions. As expected from MSI's Gaming X cards, we get a cool and efficient cooling system. Unfortunately, prices have not been released so far, but the mentioned retail prices are currently a bit too close to the 4 GB version of the RX 480. We will have to wait for retail prices.
As with the Radeon RX 480, the RX 470 supports the same features such as HDMI 2.0b, DisplayPort 1.3/1.4 for 5K monitors, HDR as well as an improved video engine.
There is no direct rival from Nvidia as yet; the GTX 1060 is much more expensive and also faster. We are eager to see the comparison with an upcoming GTX 1050 (Ti?).
