Leaked new Xbox Game Pass game previews improved Xbox 360 console support on PC

Microsoft has revealed the new Xbox Game Pass games going live in August. However, Idle Sloth on social media spotted an unannounced Xbox 360 title arriving on August 11th. While Wolfenstein 3D was already available on the PC app, the console version was previously inaccessible.
Originally a 1992 MS-DOS release, id Software’s Wolfenstein 3D debuted on the Xbox 360 in 2009. It eventually became available on the Series X|S via backward compatibility. The title that was added to Microsoft’s PC app in 2022 is a native Windows version, which lacks achievements.
Xbox 360 emulation
The classic shooter could be one of many Xbox 360 games bound for the subscription service. Currently, Game Pass relies mainly on ports or cloud streaming rather than offering software native to the console. That may soon change after recent developments with emulation.
Microsoft surprised fans when it introduced four original Xbox favorites to the PC app. Players then discovered that the company was using a program containing an Xbox 360 emulator. In theory, that would open the door to more candidates from this era.
A more inclusive Game Pass
A leaked document confirmed a continued emphasis on backward compatibility. Likely in 2027 or 2028, publishers will have the opportunity to make neglected 360 releases Xbox Game Pass games. The option should benefit all Windows devices, including handhelds, as well as the upcoming Project Helix.
The rumored Positron disc-to-digital program is another way to preserve the popular console. With discs becoming rarer, physical Xbox 360 games could be converted into digital licenses.
It’s debatable why Microsoft neglected to mention Wolfenstein 3D for Game Pass. One theory is that QuakeCon 2026, starting on August 6th, will announce it. Other new entries in the franchise may be in development. Fans are anxious to hear about the mainline Wolfenstein III from MachineGames. A remaster of the 2009 Wolfenstein could also be in the works.
