A new DOOM game is reportedly in development despite recent id Software layoffs

Xbox Game Studios has recently been affected by major layoffs, impacting employees across several studios, including id Software, the very studio behind franchises such as DOOM and Quake. Because of this, many fans started worrying about the future of the studio and whether it might be shifted into a support role.
However, a new report suggests that id Software is still actively working on the future of DOOM. According to Tom Warren from The Verge, the layoffs have not turned id Software into a support studio. Instead, Warren reported that the team is now in the early stages of developing a new DOOM game.
This report comes as a reassuring sign for fans who were concerned that the layoffs might slow down or disrupt id Software’s major projects. Warren made these comments in response to an id Software statement on X following the layoffs. In that statement, the studio acknowledged that it had been impacted by the changes, but emphasized that the layoffs were spread across different teams. id Software also stated that it still has the team it needs to build the games and technology it is known for.
The studio further noted that its current team is the same size as it was during the development of DOOM (2016), and that it will continue building the games and technology that have defined its reputation.
At the moment, very little is known about the rumored new DOOM game. The report does not mention a title, setting, gameplay direction, or release window. Because development is said to be in the early stages, it may be some time before official details are shared. However, id Software mentioned that they are looking forward to QuakeCon in August, and the studio may use the event to discuss its future projects.
