Xbox 360 games on PC using Microsoft emulator likely after datamine discovery

Microsoft surprised fans when it shadow dropped 4 original Xbox titles in its PC app without needing cloud gaming. However, many supporters would prefer Xbox 360 games to become playable in Windows. That hope grew after dataminers learned how the newfound backward compatibility works.

The path toward Xbox 360 support

TrueAchievements explains that Microsoft is using a version of an Xbox 360 emulator found on the Xbox One and Series X|S. Intriguingly, the program called XEO3 or Fission contains another emulator. Fusion is what allows the 360 hardware to boot OG favorites like BLiNX: The Time Sweeper.

TheLunarixus on X discovered code that seems to confirm this creative, albeit somewhat complicated approach. He believes that with additional effort, robust Xbox 360 support on Windows is possible. In fact, testers have already had success running titles native to the console on the OS.

The developers behind XWine1, a third-party Xbox One compatibility layer for PC, added the Fission code to their own. Plants vs Zombies is among the games that boot, with screenshots proving the accomplishment. OG Xbox releases not yet available in the official app also work after making these modifications.

More patience required?

Microsoft hasn’t detailed what classics are incoming, but promises to boost backward compatibility on PCs and handhelds. With a functioning Xbox 360 emulator, it would be a missed opportunity not to tap into the system’s massive library. That said, if the downloads debut at a slow pace, it might frustrate gamers.

Unofficial emulators immediately unlock access to a large catalog. The situation is more complex for Microsoft. Once quality testing individual targets, it could encounter licensing issues. The company has to obtain permission from publishers who may no longer be in business.

The delayed Game Pass addition of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 showed that music rights may need renegotiating. Regardless, fans of Xbox 360 games have reason to be optimistic about the future.
