Metal Gear Solid is one of the most iconic PlayStation games ever made. Right now, Steam is letting players experience the legendary 1998 stealth adventure for free – but only until Monday. After that, the game will still be available at 50% off.

Anyone who has never played Metal Gear Solid now has the perfect opportunity to change that during Steam's free weekend. Originally released in 1998, the game is widely regarded as one of the most influential titles ever released for the original PlayStation. Since 2023, it has also been available on Steam as part of the Master Collection, which includes not only the original game but also 300 additional VR training missions and a collection of digital companion books.

In Metal Gear Solid, players take on the role of Solid Snake, the legendary special operative sent to infiltrate the terrorist-controlled nuclear weapons facility on Shadow Moses Island. His mission is to rescue hostages, investigate the nuclear threat and stop the deployment of the Metal Gear REX walking battle tank. Rather than fighting your way through the facility like in a traditional shooter, success depends on observing enemy patrols, avoiding their line of sight and remaining undetected whenever possible. Snake begins the mission with almost no equipment, gradually finding weapons, ammunition and other useful items as the story progresses. Cinematic cutscenes, Codec conversations and memorable boss fights help keep the experience varied.

With more than 5,000 Steam reviews, 82% of which are positive, Metal Gear Solid remains an outstanding game even today. However, a quick look at the user reviews shows that many players had hoped for a more substantial technical overhaul. The Steam version included in the Master Collection is essentially the original 1998 release with very few changes. As a result, it not only looks noticeably dated on modern displays but also feels somewhat clunky to control by today's standards. For a free weekend, though, those shortcomings are easier to overlook. Players have until July 27. to try the game at no cost. After that, it will still be available at 50% off, bringing the price down to around $10 instead of $20. Metal Gear Solid is also rated Playable on Steam Deck.
