New Blood Interactive has announced a turn-based dungeon-crawling spin-off of its retro FPS Dusk. Dungeons of Dusk is slated for release in 2026 and is being developed by 68k Studios. The RPG canonically slips itself between Dusk’s three episodes.
New Blood’s CEO had been thinking of creating a Dusk RPG for quite a while, but didn’t have a developer who knew the ins and outs of old-school dungeon crawlers. He also wanted someone who loved DOOM RPG as much as he did. After trying out 68k Studios’ Inferno and Ludus Mortis, he found his dream team.
New Blood’s CEO Dave Bleiwess announced Dungeons of Dusk on a Steam post and said:
Dungeons of DUSK starts right after the end of Episode 1 and Episode 2, and the second half takes place between Episode 2 and Episode 3. What did you think our hero just magically got from place to place?! Hell no. He was in some DUNGEONS the whole time, obviously.
David Szymanski’s 2018 boomer shooter garnered widespread acclaim for its pixelated yet charming Quake and Doom-like aesthetics and fast-paced gameplay. However, Dungeons of Dusk flips that formula into a bite-sized RPG.
The game draws inspiration from forgotten mobile gems, such as Fountainhead Entertainment’s Doom RPG and the Wolfenstein RPG from the 2000s. Bleiwiss said in the post that he’s kept these games to himself for more than 20+ years. He further added:
Our main inspiration for Dungeons of DUSK was indeed… DOOM RPG. A mobile RPG version of DOOM, Fountainhead Entertainment, that was punching well above its weight in 2005. DOOM RPG was nothing anyone expected, everything it needed to be and more.
The result of this inspiration is an RPG with 30 campaign levels, complete with quirky NPCs and dialogue.
Dungeons of Dusk is nearly a year into its development cycle, with most mechanics complete and six to seven campaign levels already finished. A demo was presented at Steam Next Fest in February.
The game is confirmed to feature full controller support, Steam Deck verification, and a level editor upon release. Dungeons of Dusk will be priced at $16.99 and will be available on Steam, GOG, Mac, Linux, PS5, Xbox Series S|X, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android.
