Huawei has returned to the clamshell foldable market with the Pocket 2. Arriving in multiple colours with up to 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage, the Huawei Pocket 2 improves upon its predecessors in multiple areas and even has an eye on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 with IPX8 water resistance.

Huawei has now released the Pocket 2, its first clamshell foldable since the Pocket S in late 2022. As expected, the Pocket 2 carries over the design of not just the Pocket S but also the P50 Pocket that launched in December 2021. To that end, the Pocket 2 matches its predecessors with unchanged 170 x 75.5 x 7.3 mm dimensions when unfolded. For some reason, the Pocket 2 is 0.5 mm taller and 0.1 mm~0.3 mm thicker than the Pocket S or P50 Pocket when folded, though. In other words, the Pocket 2 is marginally bigger than the Galaxy Z Flip5 in folded and unfolded states.

Likewise, the Pocket 2 is heavier than most of its peers at 199 g, or 202 g for its glass back edition. While Huawei's latest clamshell features a practically unchanged form factor, it has larger displays, overhauled cameras and a higher-capacity battery. Specifically, Huawei equips the Pocket 2 with a 6.94-inch internal LTPO OLED display that outputs at 2,690 x 1,136 pixels with a 120 Hz refresh rate and a 420 PPI pixel density. Meanwhile, Huawei's external display has grown from 1.04-inches in the Pocket S and P50 Pocket to 1.15-inches in the Pocket 2. Another LTPO OLED panel, the cover display outputs at 340 x 340 pixels for a 296 PPI.

Moreover, Huawei has included a 4,520 mAh battery, a 13% improvement on the Pocket S and P50 Pocket. On top of that, the Pocket 2 supports 66 W wired, 40 W wireless and 7.5 W reverse wireless charging, which are all improvements on Huawei's older clamshell foldables. Although the Pocket 2 retains its predecessors' 10.7 MP internal camera, Huawei has moved to the following rear-facing camera hardware:

  • Primary - 50 MP, f/1.6, 23 mm, PDAF, Laser AF, OIS
  • Spectral - 2 MP
  • Telephoto - 8 MP, f/2.4, 80 mm, PDAF, OIS, 3x optical zoom
  • Ultra-wide-angle -  12 MP, f/2.2, 13 mm, AF

As usual, Huawei has not confirmed the chipset that underpins the Pocket 2. Instead, it states that the device features an octa-core CPU, presumably the Kirin 9000S, which it complements with two-way satellite connectivity, 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of expandable storage (Nano Memory card). Incidentally, the Pocket 2 matches the IPX8 water resistance that the Galaxy Z Flip5 provides, although this also means that neither handset has any certified dust resistance. The Huawei Pocket 2 starts at CNY 7,499 (~$1,043) in China with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. However, the device can cost up to CNY 10,999 (~$1,530) with 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage, which Huawei restricts to a Blue Dream colour option. Despite not outlining global release plans yet, we imagine that Huawei will do so within the coming months.
