The durability of foldable smartphones is definitely an issue - and not without good reason. The frequent folding processes put a strain on the material in a way that is unusual for classic smartphones. Samsung has now announced that the current generation of the seven-inch foldable OLED panel has received MIL-STD 810G certification.
This certification is not primarily aimed at the folding process, but describes the resistance to challenging environmental conditions and is particularly relevant in the rugged smartphone segment - although it is anything but practical, as a smartphone can be dropped in everyday life, for example.
The tests were carried out by UL Solutions and therefore not by Samsung itself. Among other things, protection against freezing moisture was tested. The model was sprayed with water at temperatures of -10 °C until a 6-millimeter-thick layer of ice was present. The display withstood this condition for four hours without damage.
The panel also withstood sudden and repeated temperature changes between -32 °C and 63 °C, and 26 drops from a height of 1.22 meters were also said to have survived without damage. According to the tests, the impact of 10.5 times the acceleration of gravity did not cause any permanent damage either. IPX5 certification is offered by the Galaxy Z Fold5, which also offers protection against water ingress.
